What a drive! (1 Viewer)

Just driven the 35 miles from Kalamata to Mystras. One of the most exhilarating and scenic routes I have ever done including the Alps, High Atlas and Pyrenees. Anyone else done it? Not terribly high 4.5kft. Max. Road a bit iffy in places too. Didn’t expect that in the Peloponnese!

Yes...we followed the same route in 2014. All the better for being relatively unexpected! We were blown away by Mystras too.

Another similar drive [possibly more challenging but quite doable] is between Geraki and Leonidio via Kosmas in the E Peloponnese...you get to see the Nunnery of Panagia Elonis clinging to the rockface high above the road....lots multiple hairpins and fabulous mountain scenery.

Once again we took this route in 2014 having visited Monemvasia and on the way to Epidavros...if you have a look at a map you'll get the idea.

Midway between Geraki and Leonidio you reach Kosmas and have to drive through the coffee drinking area in the centre of the village...a few hundred yards on you come to a Y junction with no signs! Having taken the left [wrong] one we had to reverse down the narrow street in order to get back to the right fork [correct ] much to the amusement of the local people...all part of the fun!

Did the drive in 2014. We didn't realize that the road was as challenging as it was and we arrived in Mystras much later than planned. Luckily we found an overnight stay next to a Dutch motorhome. Some of the other inland drives we took in the Pelopenesse were interest with some narrow and windy roads. Spent 6 weeks exploring the Pelopenesse, great place to explore.

We've done that road several times but in a car. It is stunning. Mystras is worth a trip and Gythio is beautiful too. Lots of lovely restaurants on the harbour. We've spent months staying in the Peloponnese mainly around Kardymili. Love it there.
