well we made it to France our first trip abroad, Eurotunnel is brilliant. Now the adventure starts. The plan was to head to Spain We had our plans all mapped out but now meeting people here in our fancy French Aire - a supermarket carpark - our plans have gone to pot. HELP what's the best way to get to Benidorm without going on the toll roads. Apparently everyone here is telling us to go down to Nevers and on to Clermont Ferrand. Any ideas would be gratefully accepted. Finishing on a high note the dogs are having a brilliant time and we have decided that Smash potato is back on our menu and much lighter than a spud. Just head south and feed back those lovely new places that you have found and no one has come across, avoiding all toll roads except the ones you coincidently come across when making the wrong turn, have a great adventure

Nice to see you are having such a good time, Bernie and Gill.
If you want a toll-free and easy trip to Beni then maybe you'd like the route we take.

We usually overnight on the aire in Oloron St Marie or Laruns, south of Pau, then it's a one-day drive.

From Oloron St Marie N134/E7, through the Somport tunnel - N330 via Jaca (get fuel at Eroski) past Huesca, Zaragoza (on a couple of occasions we have overnighted there at the municipal campsite) - then the A23 all the way down to the Med at Sagunt. Once there it's not really worth saving on tolls as it's fairly cheap. Otherwise you are driving through village after village and it's very slow going, unlike France where they are often by-passed.

Or

From Laruns and take the D934 over the mountains and join the N330 at Sabinanigo. Fill up in Huesca.
We love this route and even left early to have breakfast at the top of the pass between France and Spain - http://www.flickr.com/photos/58109210@N08/6277031522/ -
We are giving Spain a miss this time (we have been going in Feb/March then again Sept/Oct for the last few years). We have mostly stayed at Los Pinos campsite in Denia. Not ventured to Benidorm with the motorhome. But we have gone theret on the train:thumb:

We have taken the route down through Clermomt Ferrand, over the Millau bridge, stopping at Gruissan then taking the AP7 through Barcelona etc and also Biarritz/Pamplona but we find this a much easier and beautiful route especially over the mountains.:thumb:
