Since 2011 therefore I'm not a newbie anymore
Having raised monies to hold cycle races i am constantly amazed at the fitness and commitment of amateur and professional cycle riders.

Mark Cavendish is something special, to win so many of the TdF sprint stages, get through the mountains and then still be there to win at Paris is amazing.

The guys in the good team to worked their socks off to help him to win the worlds, all this and he is a nice guy too!!!

Amazing - Well done Mark!

just read this and it is amazing that there are so many amazing's in it!!!!

I have no complaints whatsoever about Mark Cavendish winning the Award - I just think that it has been tarnished by the lack of female opposition on the short list for the award.

Just a bit like us winning an Olympic Gold Medal when America and Russia were not competing.

Never mind - good luck to Mark Cavendish - pity about the tarnished title

I think its fantastic and well deserved.:thumb::thumb:

Also great to see an alternative sport honoured instead of the usual parade of grotesque footballers.:Eeek:

Speaking as a woman, I beg to disagree.

If no woman has achieved as much as the 10 actual nominees, why the hell should they be included?

Now - I actually have no idea whether one or more has or hasn't achieved similar, but there's nothing more utterly condescending than being included because you are picked as the token female, the token black person, the token blind person, lesbian/gay single parent - or whatever.

Name me the 10 females - and of course their achievements - that the Sports writers ignored? The only one I know to off the top of my head is little Ellie the swimmer, and she fell into the Junior category.
