I have just read in our local paper that the police recently did spot checks on vehicles towing trailers and caravans on the A12 near Chelmsford. It doesn't mention motorhomes, but it does say that 2 x 3.5 tonne vehicles were 15% overweight and they were both fined £600!
34 vehicles were stopped, 21 were towing trailers (of which only 12 were clear of faults).
It also mentions tyres being over the 5 year recommendation and people not having the correct category BE licence.

It has been said before that there must be many, many Moho's overweight. With the 3.5t limit but manufacturers loading them up with all the toys demanded they are getting heavier and heavier.

I saw this report and it would appear that overloaded trailers (inc caravans) are the target. But you can understand why many need educating - you see too many vehicles towing in the fast lane or going over 60mph.

When I was trucking along the 62 passed the weight watchers at Rochdale they were pulling light vans Transit/Renault etc that were towing builders trailers, mini diggers and weighing them all because of train weight overloads. It seems they have purges on certain vehicles, caravans being the latest it seems.

Favourite for the Chelmsford services check site is the Polish 3.5ton Ducato transporter towing car trailers. Always overweight never have a Taco fitted . We were pulled in a few weeks ago they were most pi..ed off to find we were plated at 6.5 tons O Licence digit taco correct Licence and Driver CPC . Builders and livestock carriers are also very popular .
If you see a 3.5ton transporter with anything larger than a BMW3 series )reversed on ) it will be overweight!!

IMV if they are looking for people driving overweight or without the correct license it is a good idea.
Should anyone end up in an accident with someone not legal there is a good chance that the insurance will be a problem as they will have good reason to deny liability.

You will always be covered by the 'third party' element, regardless of whether the other party is legal or not.

Unless the tyres would fail an mot or are damaged upon inspection there not a lot they can do about that....

Obviously not, but as it didn't mention anyone being prosecuted for tyres, I imagine they will have been educating drivers regarding the shelf life of tyres, which is a good thing (y)

They use 'my' junction on the A12 no 18. A414. Usually they sit in an ANPR van on the northbound entry ramp, a couple motor bike cops sit in the lay-by 1/2 mile north and escort the chosen few into the Boreham Setvicrs. Not there every day but frequent. Good news too as we all need dodgy trucks off the road. Never seen them pull a MH.

I would be really chuffed if my MoHo tyres lasted more than 5 years.
Two years old now and the fronts are starting to look a bit worn.
Think I'd better start leaving her parked on the drive a bit more..............................or perhaps not.:LOL:

The 5 year thing re trailer tyres is basically an insurance thing because of the way tyres deteriorate when not in use so have the chance to explode when you least expect it so the insurance companies like to protect themselves

Also if you look at a tyre sidewall over 5 years old on a trailer you may notice nothing but mostly they are cracking along the circular lines of the tyres

Last set of tyres on the caravan when fitted one was three years old when they fitted it so I asked for a NEW one and they did so and I heard them putting a complaint in whilst ordering the new tyre said they were getting fed up of the supplier trying to get rid of old stock and were looking for a new supplier which as I know the guys there I believe them

I can see a future law requirement that the date is part of an MOT and that would certainly put the cost of driving up a lot five tyres used or not having to be replaced, because of the date. It should be the condition not the age, bit like us really.

My tyres in the past would last20 years and then were worn out.
What about remould they have old carcasses an have done loads of miles before that to wear them down. Bus and lorry tyres areoften done like that

An argument often put forward but one that is a bit askew :)
In the UK, the MIB ( No ! NOT the men in black but the Motor Insurers Bureau ) is there to cover any and all losses caused by someone being uninsured

In fact we ALL pay in to the slush fund with our vehicle insurance every year

Of course, if YOU ( not you as in you Derbyshire Wanderer but you as in you are the driver ) are over weight and or do not have the correct licence then your own vehicle damage would not be covered, only that of third parties .. ( Phew ! Hope that was understandable !! I even confused myself at the end there !!! )

It is many of the tyre manufacturers recommendation Mike..
Simple rule for me is if the side walls aint perfect or display ANY signs of cracking it is time to get them replaced

Tyres aint cheap, but they are less than a coffin or two :)

I have not really seen that John. Most just recommend inspection at around that time.
