Hi all - we are trying to get away as much as possible and managed to spend last week on the south coast.
spent two nights at hawthorn farm near Dover - even though the site is next to the Dover Deal railway line it was reasonable quiet. walked from the site to the lighthouse that is east of Dover near st margarets bay and then along the cliffs to the castle. along the way we discovered that the tunnels that were used in WWII had been opened so did the tour, coffee at the NT site and finally a really good visit to Dover castle including the secret tunnels that housed the command and control for the cinque ports. really worth a visit.
On to Folkestone and the C&CC site based on the warren which is almost on the beach - the entrance is so steep (single track) that tuggers are banned from the site - which meant we met a better class of person lol. Managed to walk into Folkestone and spent the day wandering around and having a great lunch overlooking the harbour.
Next day a trip to the Abbey at Battle and once again a very good lunch in the sunshine just in front of the Abbey.
the only downside was the number of French schoolkids on history tours - there must have been hundreds in Dover and Battle - do they do day visits ? or stay a couple of days, who knows but could have done without them.
having said we are trying to get away as much as possible we are now house bound - apart from a cruise - until mid July when we head off to France for a month.
hope to see some of you on the road
Dave and Lorraine
