Waste of our money -- Darwin.

Anyone who does not use a belt after 40 years of them being a legal requirement is doing us a favour by dying out.

Seriously, if that is used as a paid for advert on TV is that money well spent when hospital wards are closing, and patients are being refused treatment on cost grounds.

Brian, I can't let that go without comment. The advert is clearly trying to use emotion to remind people to wear safety belts in cars. Many more graphic adverts have failed to get through to many people so this is perhaps an effective alternative.

As you know I am an air ambulance pilot (not a doctor) but based on what I see on a daily basis I would say a lot of money would be saved 'if the patient had only worn a seat belt'. We are often tasked to take a specialist retrieval team by air to pick up and bring back a critically ill patient who is injured as a result of a car crash.........the expense is enormous :Eeek:

Also, although an individual may not consider their life valuable I would imagine that their spouse, child or whatever does and would rather they stay alive and healthy than dead or maimed for life.

I do not think it is all about cost:Sad:

I don't think public money is involved, this is just appearing on you tube.
If it does finally persuade a few to wear their seat belt then perhaps money would be well spent :thumb:

I learned the value of seats belts way back when I raced... Always use one and always berate those that do not.. Anything that promotes their value is good as far as I am concerned :thumb:

Certainly a lot of thought has gone into this to produce what one has alrady described as a very powerful 'advertisement' without the unpleasant reality of what DOES happen in such an accident. And, to repeat what I said some weeks back on a similar thread, these are the sort of films that the TV channels should be compelled to show amongst the commercials (free of charge) as conditions of their licence. In that way they reach their maximum audience. Very impressive.:thumb:

what they need to start showing is the damage an airbag does to a person if a seat belt isn't worn with one.

Good point. I am amazed/horified that you see a lot of injured people not wearing seatbelts which means many times more not wearing belts that are not involved in accidents. How dumb is that.

But it is about cost. Does that advert save more lives than spending the same money on hospital personnel ?

I don't know, you may well be right.

I think I understand you. It is of course also related to the amount of people who drink and drive. Either way, when involved in a car crash seat belts and air bags reduce the chance of serious injury manyfold.

Medical treatment and how the patient got there will ALWAYS be a contentious issue.......what about smokers, drinkers, drug addicts and so on. We have a health service that (mostly) works, it can not afford to be too moral of judgemental in its delivery.

Mind you, if I had my way all 'preventative' medical treatment would be paid for for :hardhat: :reel:

I'll get me coat and duck for cover now

The effectiveness of any initiative that has anything to do with 'prevention' can never be judged accurately. We know that there will always be the reply ,"If it saves one life ......." etc. However, there is one thing that can be measured: The cost of any fatal road collision runs into seven figures. So personally, I feel the costs in producing effective films such as this are totally justified - providing they reach a wide audience.
