Hi we are having a tow bar fitted to our van, does anyone know why we would pay extra for a 13pin? As it's 75 pound dearer. The other pin is 7 pin. What's the benefits of the 13pin? Thanks and please. Sharon

13 pin more recently used combines basic trailer lighting with power for fridge etc if you tow a caravan and more secure in socket when fitted. If its just for a trailer board 7 pin will probably suffice. Look underneath the back of your motorhome ours is ford based and already has a 13 pin socket fitted as standard even without a towbar!!

7 years followed by a break of 11 years and then 4+ years but given up now
If you are also having an A-frame to tow a small car some of the ones with electronic braking NEED 8 pins to work.

Our toad uses 10 of the 13 pins a frame by towbars 2 tow cars.
The 7 for the lights 2 to keep the toad battery charged and 1 for a warning light.
But the brakes on the toad work with just 7 I think the battery would go flat eventually on the toad.

With the 7pins you need 2 now on most caravans/trailers . 13 pin was standard on audi/vw stuff years back & we used to swop them for a 7 pin here or use an adaptor- The 13 pin is now the EU standard.
