Hi all
We have the standard locking cap fitted to our hobby 725

I never lock it as we don't have a key for it.
However on trying to remove it (usually press and turn)
I find it's just spinning as if had been locked.

No one ot my knowledge has fiddled with it.
Any ideas on how to remove it without a key
many thanks
Kev

If you are going to replace it anyway drill a 1/8" hole at least 1" deep around a quarter of an inch outside the lock barrel. Leave the drill bit in the hole whilst you remove the cap.

Also got the Hobby 725, and the water locking cap is very temperamental...takes ages to un-lock, and often sticks whilst trying to lock it.

If you are going to replace it anyway drill a 1/8" hole at least 1" deep around a quarter of an inch outside the lock barrel. Leave the drill bit in the hole whilst you remove the cap.

Came across this fix many years ago when I had a dodgy cap on my Elldis 320..a Dutch guy, on the same aire, saw me struggling and suggested drilling a small hole, he even lent me a drill, I didn't think it would work, but it did. I used a small screwdriver in the hole, push it whilst twisting the cap open..it works.

I don't want to destroy the cap and have to buy another
So can you explain a bit more about drilling one hole and inserting a screwdriver?

ie where to drill
how deep etc
cheers

It was over 15 years ago...but as far as I can recall it's something like this...

drill a hole in the recessed part of the cap, where your fingers would go (close to the key bit), only drill through the first layer of plastic ie not all the way through, you don't want the drill bit poking through the other side, then a small screwdriver through the hole and push gently as you try to turn the cap.

I think the screwdiver push over-rides the locking mechanism.

Hope that does the trick.

The lock is fine just a small hole in it.
However it still wouldnt come off
so I twisted with a pair of mole grips and off it came
The cap and lock are OK except for the small hole I drilled
and the tank neck is ok
I think it just needed a bit more force but I was loathe to risk damaging the neck
Thanks to everyone for help offered
