2002 VW T4 Westfalia California 2.5 TDi Automatic, £16,995 o.n.o. private sale. Located near Bristol.
I realise that Funsters seeking used vans are generally looking for something bigger with more mod cons; but, in case you might be interested, or know someone who is looking for a tidy VW campervan, I thought I might as well advertise it on this forum before putting it on Autotrader. My other half wanted a bigger PVC with a washroom That’s now on order.
This California is a top quality T4 swb VW campervan conversion with 4 berths and the classic layout of side kitchen and elevating roof. Westfalia were the first official VW converter and having practiced for 50 years since 1952, by the time they made mine it was well sorted. I imported it myself from Germany in 2007. Automatic ones are very rare and contrary to some opinion they are reliable.
The size fits into a standard 4.8m x 2.4m parking space and at 1.98m high it goes under 2m height barriers and even into some multi-storey car parks. On French motorways it is in Classe 1, same as a car.
Details:
2002 California “Event” 50th anniversary edition in reflex silver. 1 previous owner, a German dentist. No smokers/pets. 131k Km (81,500 miles) approx. LHD, like every T4 Westy.
Full service history, part VW franchised dealer, then by Luckwell Garage (independent specialists recommended on the VW T4 forum), cambelt and water pump replaced 2015, autobox overhauled November 2014 including new ECU. 120 AH Gel leisure battery replaced 2015. Recently serviced, new MOT to 29 April 2018.
Cab is basically same as the VW Caravelle (not a van or Kombi), with high spec. including aircon, driver and passenger airbags, cruise control, central locking, electric front windows and heated mirrors, heated rear window, multifunction trip computer, MPH speedo face (not an overlay which you find on most imports), PAS, ABS, EDL, VW alloy wheels with good tyres, factory tints, front fogs, headlamp washers, swivel heated front seats with armrests, locking glove box, illuminated vanity mirrors on both sunshades, separate heater controls for rear passengers, VW Gamma radio + CD auto changer. Towbar which I have never used.
The California side kitchen conversion includes a TUV certified rock-and-roll rear seat with two 3-point seatbelts and headrests. Eberspacher diesel heater with programmable timer / controller, elevating roof with reading light, removable double bed making 4 berths in total. The roof canvas is in good condition and has never leaked. “Step-by-Step” upholstery and lined full set of curtains also in good condition. Top loading compressor fridge, 2 gas burner hob, sink with drainer, cutlery drawer, 2 shelved storage cabinets underneath, and removable table. Corner wardrobe with shelving. Inboard 25L fresh and waste water tanks. Sliding NS rear window. Brandrup storage pockets. There is space for a small porta-potti behind the rear seat or under the bed. The only gas appliance is the hob so a Campingaz 907 lasts several trips. Westfalia conversions are well thought out and built to last.
The paintwork is generally good with a few chips and light scratches. There are small rust spots at the top of both A pillars which will need rectifying this year. The rear screen washer is inoperative and has been disconnected. The overall condition is basically good and consistent with mileage. All of this is reflected in the realistic asking price. A local motorhome dealer said I should ask £20k but I want the Westy to go to a good home.
Also included in the sale: the original pair of LHD headlights, 8 piece Thermo Mat set of internal screens and sliding window air vent from JustKampers, and California Owner’s Manual in English. tel 07518271834 or PM me.
