I have a fantastic old Elliot pillar drill

567536.jpg

but its 3 phase
I had been using it on a converter that I rescued [brand new] from a skip [I think it may have been a VFD but not sure]
After years of great service the converter started to trip the main earth leakage so I returned to that place, a skip
So... I need to run my 3 phase drill on my 240 single phase supply

Straight forward 3 phase converters are more than the drill is worth

Would this unit below do it?

I have searched and found people just using capacitors but that seems a bit heath robinson

Any advice from the collective appreciated

should be fine as long as your motor is duel voltage 410v and 220v three phase if it is you will need to change some links in the motor if it's been run on 415v three phase.
Post a picture of the motor plate and the connections in the terminal box of the motor.

A bit of lateral thinking.. Why not replace the motor ?
That is what I did on my lathe.. Plenty around ( lots on eBay and cheaper than the converter ! )

I put a single phase motor on my Elliot years ago, it also has a foot mounted switch which is a real boon.
When you look at modern offerings of Chinese machine tools you have to wonder how many of them will stand the test of time ?
I am on the look out for a converter for my recently acquired surface grinder as the motor is integral with the head casting so can't be changed.

The shaft is a awkward size.
I can only find a motor that fits at a cost of £180 plus switch

The cheap machine mart ones are metric

Ok.. in that case why not get a replacement motor ( as I said, several on fleabay both old and new ) and if need be get a replacement pulley wheel ?
They are cheap as chips and can even get new ones with no hole drilled at all, so you can drill the shaft hole your self and cut the key way.. no worries :)
I am away tomorrow but I do have a couple of motors sitting around.. I doubt they will be the right power to be honest but if one of them is, you can have it for postage costs..

I changed the1ph motor on my pillar drill to 3ph just so I could use a VFD. No belt shifting, smooth running, soft start, braking, instant reverse, no comparison. Stick to your original idea - if you have been used to VFD going to 1ph will feel like a step backwards.

Its funny but thats where I started:)
I don't have a wiring diagram for the motor, does the wire polarity matter, motor terminals are labeled 1 to 6 with links on three of them?

If your supply is on a RCD it is not uncommon for it trip when using a VFD.
Sometimes it will trip sometimes it won't.
So a new VFD may not solve the issue you mayneed to change the RCD.

My motor's 550 Watts ( roughly 3/4 hp) and 2800 RPM. I run it mostly on the second smallest motor pulley and just toggle between hi and lo on the gearbox, does most things I want but like Tony says a VFD would be of benefit.
