We'd like to be able to watch english channels on our tv when abroad for longer periods.

We're thinking of getting a free standing dish - we dont want to pay for a fitted system. We understand that size of dish will determine what channels we can receive.

Our question is, do we need a Sky subscription? Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but we've searched and can't find a definitive answer.

No you don't. There are hundreds of free sat channels available on Astra 2 with a cheap freesat receiver.

Are those channels on the wider Astra 2 footprint @mustaphapint ?

We'd hope to watch BBC etc in e.g. southern France. Subject to how the dish performs of course.

If you're going to Spain you'll need a very big dish over 1m we took a 1.2m dish and it was very patchy where you could get astra2.

Ours is just a 40cm dish and only works as far down as Nantes for the usual UK channels. Further south when good internet is available we use filmon.com

We've never really found Internet good enough to stream TV.

We've ordered a cheap 80cm dish to play around with and see how we get on.

    Thanks all

Many of the Sky PAY channels are on the "european" beam and so easier to receive then the free, non sky channel like BBC ITV C4 and Five that are on the harder to receiver uk beam.
But some of the less popular free channels are also on the european beam,....pick, challenge for example.

Do any of the French satellites have free channels that may have English programmes on (with French subtitles)?

If so which satellites are they on?

Lots of french channels on 19 east and 5 west. Some free, some encrypted.

Dont watch French TV so cannot say, but if like Spain and Spanish channels, then if they show a US or UK programme you can change the audio from dubbed french into the original English. But then it may be like the free german channels, which do not do this at all....

If you just want to receive national TV in France or Spain a normal terrestrial aerial with HD freeview is enough. There are lots of programs in France with English as an alternative language, so long as you like programs such as NCIS, Friends, Merlin etc. Discovery channel is transmitted in Spain in English. France recently made a change to their terrestrial TV and it looks like you can now only receive with HD equipment.
