Having used aires in france many times and never had any trouble with locals or youths , I would not feel as safe in the UK as motorhome lifestyle Is not the same here. Campsites britstops etc are safer but I would not feel confident parking in a supermarket car park for the night as I might in France.

In America It`s quite common to overnight in a Walmart, amongst others. (also casino`s). We did it frequently, often in company of 20 or more R-V`s of various types and sizes!!.

When they took over Asda. I asked a HULL branch Manager if I could "overnight" as it was Walmart "Policy" He almost had a fit!.

The likelihood is you are correct. but at the time it was being suggested as the basis of a "proper" Aire. And a likely overnight stop for those using the HULL ferries?. some of whom had been using on street parking in the East of the City, whilst awaiting their Turn. A bit like the Esplanade at Dover.

I don't doubt that some people suggested it as an aire but, looking back at my notes from the time, there was obviously an element of confusion. Some people identified it, correctly, as the Lorry Park and others, incorrectly, as the Park & Ride when they described staying there, even though the two are actually on different sides of Clive Sullivan Way (P&R north and Lorry Park south).
To create a "proper" aire (in the sense of a dedicated one for motorhomes) would, I suspect, have been rather expensive as they are sited in a large business/trading/retail park full of established businesses. Looking at Google Maps, even the Lorry Park is on a site which is home to at least 2 businesses rather than being a totally separate area.

Some 9 years ago (when I didn't fully appreciate the restrictions of the 1960 Act) I contacted all the major supermarkets about overnighting in their car parks. I received polite replies but soon came to realise the reality of the situation being as I posted above - obtaining site licences for individual premises is an overhead they do not need.
