Our van has now passed the 20,000 miles and whilst the tyres appear to be in good order is it worth swapping front to rear corner to corner to gain the benefit of extra tread for the front drive and steering?

Funsters with a lot more knowledge than me will answer your question, but they will probably need to know the age of the tyres,as 5 to 7 years seems to be the limit.
Mate of mine had a blowout on a tyre that had good tread but was over 10 years old.

After 5 years old, I had mine checked bi annually by the local tyre suppliers and it was me that decided to change them last year and the tyre place said it wasn't necessary but I changed anyway. They were 11 years old. Blow outs can and do happen to newer tyres too

You must check to see if the tyres are marked with a specified 'direction of rotation'. If they are, it will not allow diagonal swapping but you could still swap front-rear on each side.

It is quite common on car tyres but I'm not sure about van tyres. Thought it was better to flag it up though.

is it worth swapping front to rear corner to corner

I was always inclined to put the new tyres on front axle ie the driven and steering end. There was a long discussion about the subject some time ago on the forum and after tyre blowout testing videos the conclusion was, the best tyres/new should be on the the rear axles.

Totally against my many years of putting fresh boots on my vehicles. The video evidence of vehicle controllability was impressively in favour of best boots on the back !

Oh yes and don't brake. You should actually accelerate, get the vehicle straightened out then decelerate and brake very gently. I will see if I can find the link to the video.

Some advice here http://kumhotyre.co.uk/kumho-news/should-you-fit-new-tyres-to-the-front-or-rear/

Here we go and a nice big motorhome video https://smartdriving.co.uk/Driving/Driving_emergencies/blowout.htm

You will love this from Michelin don''t lose too much sleep !! you only die once (usually) !!

Yes, I've seen that and agree it is totally against what we were advised years ago, however, if all four were bought at the same time then swapping wouldn't affect the 'new' advice.

I'm confused  when swapping tyre's would you do the following :
Swap the Front nearside to the Rear nearside ?? or do you change the Front nearside onto the Rear Offside etc ? as in criss cross ?

And are cross ply better when with radials?

Ah, never seen or heard of that.

I've only ever seen it on Motorcycle tyres and used to do with the direction of the overlap - tending to push the joint together rather than try and pull it apart.
Although I find it hard to believe it's necessary on modern tyre and even less on car tyres unless there is a particularly strange directional tread pattern for the rain.
