Do I plod along at 60mph and 2000revs and clog up my engine with carbon?
Or do I travel at 70 to75 mph at 2500 revs
So it can clean it's self?
The first will take longer but save on fuel ,but maybe not on garage bills.
The second option will get me there quicker so more time with feet up with a cup of tea. But more cost in fuel maybe less on garage bills.
What's your opinion guys gals.
Laurie.

Surly 60 mph is plenty to keep it clean ? Especially on a nice motorway run . 70mph 2500 revs is caning it , what's the bhp ?

75mph in a motorhome .I would definitely start to bottle it at 65 .Might push it to 70 on a rolling road .Can you just rev the engine to 2500 revs for ten minutes with hand brake on lol.:Eeek:

Why just rev the engine when I can knock some miles of my journey? It's a long way back from Portugal. When it says 75 on clock it's doing 69 on satnag. Six speed gearbox. 2.3 130 engine

You occasionally need higher revs to recycle the DPF but you don't need to do it all the time.
I was to the understanding that you need to be at 2500 revs for 20 mins for it to get to the right temperature.
Or have I got that completely wrong I sometimes do.

Hmmm...on a motorway will happily chug along at 70mph but then my motorhome does have performance in her title! Advise given to me re clearing the filter was 2000 revs for 20 minutes should clear it out. Either on the road or sat on the drive depends if you want to annoy the neighbours.

Or stay at 60mph but change down into fifth. Job done.

High revs are not required.
The DPF will run a burn off when it reaches a certain level of 'blockage' determined by a differential pressure sensor and that the engine is at the correct running temperature.
Once these conditions are met and the burn starts it then needs about 20 minutes to complete.
Only regular short runs where the engine does not reach temperature plus a burn time (usually 40 minutes or so) will result in no burn offs or aborted burn offs which will over time result in a blocked DPF and lockout.
Also using the engine regularly to charge batteries while stationary on site is not a good idea as it will not reach temperature.
Driven normally for usually sensible distances will generally keep it all trouble free.

I don't have a DPF to worry about (2002 Merc 2.7l Sprinter) and I tootle along happily at 58mph: the same sort of speed that most trucks move at, so I'm not continually overtaking then pulling in to let cars go past. However, on a clear open road I'll stick it up to 70mph (on the clock) and occasionally hit 75-80 for a short stretch if I'm getting past 2 lanes of lorries, especially on continental roads (Italian tune-up it used to be called). I've been informed by my MOT/service garage that it needs a clean out now and again; I don't think they were referring to the interior

Gordon

PS If I was in the car, I'd doubtlessly be going faster, but in the MH I usually think "what's the rush?".

Obviously on the continent somewhere, doing 60 on most UK motorways on the Thursday afternoon before Easter is a distant dream.

It's worse than that down here most days. Word has it that they're about to install some Pay & Display machines on the M25.

I also do not have a DPF - 2003 2.8Jtd.

A couple of MOTs ago they advised that the emissions were getting near limits(No 'Advisory') and to give the engine a 'blast' from time to time. I do this before the MOT in particular, by dropping down from 5th to 4th, or even 3rd, at 2500-3000 revs for a few minutes, so not going very much over 60 mph. Last MOT they said the emissions were well within limits.

I normally drive at 2100-2200 at a real 60mph since after the re-map she is labouring below that on hills, but if I keep the revs up she sails up. Since then I have been getting 1-2 mpg better fuel performance.

So those revs and speeds do not seem to cause problems as long as I give the engine a blast from time to time. Therefore my take is that it is not necessary to run fast all the time. Remember that at max. wts. we are working our engines quite hard enough, which is what diesels like.

I ran the diesel engine in the boat at 1800 revs, which was really too slow, but it was because the boat is overpowered and to run higher revs only resulted in the extra power producing a bigger quarter-wave and drag but not much speed unless overcoming a head sea.

It will get to temp if your driving but not quite if your only revving

Guys, guys! What the hell is DPF? ( thought they delivered parcels) .....in fact, what are you talking about? o_O
diesel particulate filter - another cat type which gathers soot when engine labouring , so every now and again it will regenerate itself chucking all the soot its collected on to the following vehicle windscreen , mind boggles don't it(n)

Getting Better
Car or van, diesel or petrol I use millers fuel additive and always fill right up on visits to petrol station.
I drive the van around 55-60 all the time, however, when the gauge is low and I'm about to fill up I drive it to the station like I stole it... always make sure the engine is up to normal temperature when doing this...

58 mph @2000rpm keeps me well happy in tow with hgv; passing as i need too and when on cruise control get a return of c.32mpg which works for me. IMHO anything above 60 aint worth it as it only gives you a couple of mins advantage on a journey. I presume we are all talking motorway/peage/autobahn as driving down country lanes in between villages none of the discussion matters..:whistle:
