Does it say what the power consumption is of the Grundig, looked on the Argos site & it doesn't mention USB or SD card? Have found that a lot of TV's have a USB connector but it's just for servicing & it doesn't work for films or pictures.

The HD ready sets are just that - HD ready......ready for when they start sending H/D signal as standard...whenever that will be! Until then, you need the set top box/sky HD box etc!

They seem to dangle technology like a carrot! lol!

sorry mate....HD ready means they are capable of showing HD pictures BUT only through another HD device....sky HD box, HD DVD player etc.

full HD is ready to go and requires no other equipment.

so if you buy an item with HD ready on it dont expect an HD picture on its own.

Well that`s our 13th year & still loving it.
avtex

Hi all,

We wre the idiots at the motor home show that bought the 20" Avtex, with a carrying bag, digital aerial etc etc.
Funny how the tele worked perfectly in the show yet wen we used it for the first time just outside Gloucester the picture was Crap, seems the digital aerial they sold us wasn`t as good as their sales splurge, so whilst everyone else with the Status 530 aerial (which we were advised against) watched the tele we didn`t.

Have to be fair though the Avtex is a nice bit of kit, built in DVD, will take cards and memory stick, there again at £350 it should be.

Regards Robnchris

it says dc 12v 5a power consumption 60w.
i didnt see anything about the sd and usb until i opened it. in the manual it says usb port, a usb disk to be allowed to playback in your dvd mode.

sd/ms/mmc port allow the insertion of a sd/ms/mmc card

Avtex for us :thumb:
Superb picture quality from any angle whether on status aerial or satellite. Simple setup for any source, Dvd, Scart, Aerial etc.
Pretty expensive but reckon that over the lifetime worth the cash.
Happy viewing.

Partly true ...

Except in a force x storm, (as we were for several days in Spain recently) it helps to pass the time, even if it's only for the weather forecast:Sad:

This is my first..... I will fit it but that does not mean I will be glued to it.... But then I intend to go out on the road fulltiming ( well for as long as I want ) so the need is a little different I guess..

Your resume says "new to motorhoming". Which explains that statement. Our, all of 2 years experience says a lot of every nation cannot exist with a TV fix.

We watch them arrive on site, two things happen with great haste, they hook up, the satellite dish has an erection. They then uncross their legs and have a pee.

When a group arrives we are treated to a display "Ballet de Dish" as they all twirl seeking their distant fixes, some a lot more successfully then others.

We have a craving for bike racing but apart from that, like the odd DVD in the evening when nothing better is on offer. Just laid down A Bit of a Do for this year's travels. Lots of other classics in stock.

There are no more 12v/240v TV's about now, they are all 240v apart from specialist makes like Avtex.

I own a TV wholesaler down in Poole and they cannot get any and they do well known makes.

Peter
i have a really nice 19'' flat screen tv/dvd/freeview/i pod dock from tesco and all that for £180. it is 240v but when i require it from the battery i have a cheap 500a. inverter from aldi which works fine

HD Ready / Full HD

Hi

To avoid confusion, here is what each of the TV standards means:

Standard Definition: 576i resolution 720x576 (576p is 704x576, but not used in UK)

HD Ready: Minimum support for 720p resolution 1280x720. Some 'HD Ready' sets can also do 1080i, but usually not very well as they dont have the requisite no of pixels: 1920x1080

Full HD: Referrs to a set that can do 1080p resolution: 1920x1080.

the 'p' means progressive scan, while the 'i' means interlaced. An interlaced picture is lower quality, in practice, 1080i is about the same quality as 720p.

The terms 'HD Ready' and 'Full HD' refer only to the capability of the set to display video using these standards, they do not imply that any built in freeview tuner is cable of driving the set at either 720p or 1080p.

In practice, all (current) freeview (DVB-T) tuners built into 'HD Ready' (720p) or 'Full HD' (1080p) sets can only drive the set with a standard definition signal (720x576). Some sets are, however capable of 'upscaling'. This is where a processor built into the TV analyses the video, and invents the information to display the missing pixels by analysing the surrounding pixels, and guessing the appropriate colour for the missing pixel. Upscaling cant create an HD-Quality picture, but it can improve an SD-Quality picture. It can also suffer from issues due to the high compression ratio's used in DVB-T, and the resulting aliasing.

The DVB-T standard uses MPEG2 (the same as whats used on DVD's) to compress its data. Transmitting all the info in a 1080p signal using MPEG2 as he compression medium would require *massive* amounts of bandwidth, or a compression factor that would make the whole excersise pointless due to the resulting lack of quality.

H264 is an MPEG4 compression technology that is a far better compression algorithm for transmission of 720p or 1080p video. MPEG4 is used in DivX moves, xVid movies, and Windows Media Video (WMV) as well as in mobile technologies.

A new standard for terrestrial digital, known as DVB-T2 uses H264 as its compression technology. This is the technology that will be used to transmit HD TV over freeview in the near future.

The freeview DVB-T hardware in an HDTV is designed to decode SD video encoded with MPEG2, it does not 'know' how to decode H264, and it is likely not powerfull enough to decode H264 in real-time anyway (H264 requires more grunt to decode than MPEG2).

I don't know of a current 'Full HD' or 'HD Ready' set that has a decoder built in thats capable of decoding DVB-T2. If the 'Full HD' or 'HD Ready' set does not have such a decoder then it will not be able to recieve any future HD channels (transmitted using DVB-T2) without the additon of a set-top-box connected via an HDMI socket. These set-top-boxes are just starting on appear on the market.

For Satellite (Sky & FreeSat), the situation is a wee bit different. DVB-S is the standard used, but the transmission may use either MPEG2 (SD) H264(HD).

There are very few sets with DVB-S built in, those that do have it built in will be capable, like freeview TV's of decoding the MPEG2-encoded SD transmissions only.

BBCHD and ITV-HD (available on freesat) are, transmitted using H264-encoded high def video over DVB-S. Your recieving equipment (whether integrated into TV, or in a set-top-box) will need to be able to decode H264 in order for you to view ITV-HD or BBC-HD on your HDTV.

There is another standard for DVB called DVB-S2. This is capable of multiple streams - i.e SD and HD in the same transmission. It is not likely to completely replace DVB-S for 10-15 years though, but if you buy a freesat set-top-box, TV card or integrated TV make sure it does both DVB-S and DVB-S2.

After having written all that, note that you will be hard-pressed on a small screen used in a motorhome to tell the difference between SD and HD. You'll be even harder pressed to tell the difference between DVD and BlueRay...
