IMV if you are using sites for a good period of time then a caravan wins hands down purely down to the ability to use the car for tootling around, however if you only stop for a day or two then a MH is by far the best option.

But if you have dogs a MH is best full stop as you don't have to worry about taking them out with you all the time in hot weather as a MH is much cooler inside than a car which can get VERY hot even in cold weather if the sun's out.

The cost of a ferry crossing is higher as my "vehicle" is now 20m+ instead of 6m.
Are you sure?
My artic lorries were not that long unless they had a trombone trailer along with a long load of girders, Do you carry long load signs and a have a police escort.

My passion are motorhomes but I now have a caravan. We stopped travelling around and tend to holiday in a single place so that was the reason for the change.
There are, howeve, a couple of negatives. We cannot use Aires which we used a lot in France. I have to tax and insure a car big enough to tow (my original car, a Fiesta 1.0 would struggle pulling a skateboard). The tax on the Hyundai is the same as the PVC we had and the insurance is about the same. I have to also insure the caravan and then buy lots of bits to stop someone taking it. The cost of a ferry crossing is higher as my "vehicle" is now 20m+ instead of 6m.
In return I pay the same campsite fees and have the use of a pleasant vehicle to trip around Spain or wherever I end up.
Swings and roundabouts. You pays your money and takes your choice.
Bloody hell that is some caravan you are towing! Are all bedrooms ensuite.

Thanks to the last two posters. I had added 6m caravan and 4.5m car and come up with 20m.
Blame it on age and the fact that the van is 20ft+ in old money and I mixed all the numbers up.
The pair have come out about £100 dearer than the last time I went to Spain in the PVC.

Have had caravan in the past but prefer motorhome . In UK depending on planned trip either put bikes on back or a/frame car.
Across the water bikes on back and car hire if needed.
Would not go back to caravan.

We're undecided , had the motorhome for 18 months but miss not having a car .
I can see us buying a caravan again as we like to stay for a month at a time whilst in Spain overwintering and the lack of transport is a bummer

Because our friends convinced us that a Motorhome would be easier and although we enjoy it the lack of transport has been at times an inconvenience .
We spend 4 months of the winter in Spain and only move 2/3 times so we miss the car and I hate public transport and not keen on cycling although we do have bikes

Have you considered whether electric bikes would be more suitable than a normal bike? Lots of people have them now and love going out on them.

I think you need to change your friends as these current ones seem to give poor advice.

Would rather tow a caravan abroad than drag a car , besides using an A frame in Spain is asking for a heap of trouble

You do realize that you'll have kicked off the debate again!
What about hiring a wee runaround car when you're there? Don't know what off-peak pricing is like now but used to be dirt cheap.

Over a 45 year period, I have Had Caravans, 3 R-V`s and now a Euro M-H. After I sold the R-V, (approaching 70) we tried Caravanning again for a couple of years. The Big issue was Comfort, (back and lower limb issues). Caravan Seating Design does not give support in the "Right" places, playing about with pillows/cushions is no help and Butchering a new Caravan to fit decent seating, even if the payload would take it, plays havoc with resale values!. Any Decent sized van requires a BIG tow vehicle, an SUV at least!. because Most Modern Cars have too low towing capacity. The total combined cost is close enough to that of a Motor-home not to figure IMV.

Using the "Captains" Seats in the M-H with the minimum of rearrangement allows SWMBO the comfort needed, (in the r-v she had the recliner!). I elect to tow (Yes "A" Frame!!) a small car, again because of mobility issues, I buy them cheap(ish) run them for a few years, and sell or scrap them, IF we where get back access to Foreign Travel insurance, currently barred due to medical needs, I would look at obtaining a "Smart" and putting it on a light trailer for continental use.

As others have said "Horses for Courses". You have to match your need to what you can Achieve.

P.s. Someone mentioned "levelling"?. Now that was where the Jacks on the R-V where superb!.

I'm giving serious thought to changing our 7m coach built for a 5.4 m PVC and a caravan. PVC to replace car and also used as camper for short trips, then towing the caravan to the Continent where we like to stay in one place for a week or more at a time, using the PVC as transport with added bonus of not always having to return to base.
Can't see a downside yet, but expect I just haven't thought hard enough yet. :D

There was a Guy, who we used to see regular, who did just that, he had an American "B" Class and Towed a Tri-axle Sunnybrook Trailer!. Last I saw it was on it`s way to Spain! with a Motorcycle on a frame on the front Fender!.
