Hi all

Setting off on a trip through Germany and looking to drop into Austria. I am a tag axle 5 ton so have looked up on the Go Box. This looks a bit expensive. Looking for fellow travellers who have used the none motorway/expressway roads. Can you let me know if the roads are suitable for me.

Hi

I think your question is too broad to give a definitive answer.. but .. most non toll main roads will be fine..

For plotting a route using non toll roads try Google maps routing, select non toll roads in preferences. You can then zoom in to street view and 'see' the road

Via Michelin is also good and.. again select non toll roads.

After encountering the Austrian Police three years ago I would NEVER venture there again.
We were travelling in a motorhome which was 3.5 ton so no charges were in force, then. After stopping at a toll booth we were taken to one side and removed from the van. This burly woman lifted the bonnet to check the Vin plate and decided we were 5.4 ton. She hadn't read the plate correctly meaning we had breached there laws by not paying tolls/or obtained a GoBox. I was escorted off to a room whilst my wife was taken to another part of the building. Our van was driven into a compound. By chance 2 hours later when the new shift of Police came along we had one with a brain. He double checked the Vin and agreed we should never have been put through this ordeal. To late was the cry so we left and vowed NEVER to return.
Good luck with whatever you decide but be careful not to venture onto a chargeable section of route.

Have a look at Practical Motorcaravan, the last 2 issues. Seems the GoBox is fairly straight forward to obtain at the border. We're going down through in June and as we're 4.250 tonnes there is no option. I think keeping off the toll roads might prove a bit tricky so have decided to bit the bullet and get the Go Box which we'll keep until going back through Austria on the way home.
