Hi we are travelling for first time in spain with our county Lancashire. We leave bilbao and will make our way to the coast on the east side via zaragoza
the. Will probably make it just past Valencia and want to return via the edge of western madrid? Any help on best ways to navigate around outskirts of madrid?

Greetings,

As part of their commitment to skin the EU alive financially, Spain (ie US:Angry:) has spent a a fortune on roads around Madrid. They've got more rings around it than Saturn.

We did that route several years ago tugging to the Valencia area and it was a doddle

Madrid has a superb ring road system; just stay alert to ensure you are on the correct road! (Sat Nav is very worthwhile.)

For one section (it felt like 200yards: I don't recall getting into 4th gear) we were charged 45c: the shortest and cheapest Peage I've ever known.

If you don't mind "getting off the motorway", there is a very nice run up through the Gredos mountains [Talavera de la Reina to Avila]. Almost all Spanish roads are comfortable to drive along.

Enjoy - Gordon

PS Remember that Spain is the 2nd most mountainous country in Europe.

Hola
There is a superb motorway all the way past Zaragoza to Valencia that's free and so is getting round the Valencia ring road. The motorway south towards Benidorm etc is then toll.
However if you take the Madrid turn off cutting across country to Villena then that motorway is also free and superb views. At Villena you can continue to Madrid or turn south towards Alicante and that is also free.
Have a great safe journey.
As others have already said Madrid ring road is muy facil (very easy):thumb:

Dolly, we have driven on the ring road motorways around Madrid with no problems whatsoever but we would like you to heed this warning. Forewarned is forearmed!

The Foreign Office warns tourists heading to Spain for their summer holidays that British-registered vehicles are an 'easy target' for criminals on the motorways. Owners have had their passports, money and possessions stolen in quick-distraction muggings.

The thieves use loud noises, fake accidents and supposed pleas for help with their own vehicle problems to trick their victims before stealing belongings from British vehicles or mugging the motorist.

For example, you may be driving along the motorway and not notice that someone in another car throws a stone at your vehicle. There is a loud bang. The criminals then gesticulate that something is wrong with your vehicle. You pull over to see what has happened and the gang pulls in behind you and persuade you and your passengers to leave your vehicle. The criminals cause a distraction at the back of your vehicle whilst an unseen accomplice steals from the front. Ladies handbags left in the passenger foot well are a particular target.

You may be more tired and therefore more vulnerable when you've been travelling, so separate your valuables into different places in the vehicle, and be on your guard against anyone who attempts to stop you or ask you for help, as they may well be part of a gang operating a scam.

We wish you a very happy and safe trip to Spain. The Spaniards are lovely people and the majority are law-abiding so you should have a great time Just wanted you to be aware of potential problems so that you can avoid them. Often it's not the Spanish but other nationalities that carry out the crimes.
