I have a Knuas 510c motorhome and am looking to tow a smart car.

Been out and looked at the plate under the bonnet and the plate that Knuas fit.

the both say the same thing

2800 kg

1460kg

1460kg

ok 2800 must be the total weight and the other 2 front and back axle, in fact on the plate under the bonnet the 2 1460 figures have a 1 and 2 in front of them, how do I work out the actual weight i am allowed to tow.

On the knuas plate there is what the numbers relate too, in german, bable fish does not make any sense of it.

I just hope the answer is simpler than my explanation :ROFLMAO:

Forgot to mention its a fiat ducatto 1900TD

unfortunately your vin plate doesnt show a train weight....the total weight including trailer/toad.

the first is the gross weight of your van
second is the front axle
third is the rear axle

you cant work out a max trailer weight using those figures.

best to contact the base maker and give them the details.

its possible, at 2800kg, there is no weight allowance for towing and you'll find a few manufacturers dont allow towing at all.

it would help if you state the base vehicle, not the conversion.

its my understanding the ducato range have a towing limit of around 2000kg to 2500kg depending on body type. (chassis/cab...panel van etc)

had a quick web search and cant find any definative info on the 1.9ltr.

best to check with fiat.

and dont forget its the toads GROSS weight you need, not the unladen weight, to be legal, and as the van is under 3500kg you will need a minimum B+E licence. (car + trailer over 750kg)

Just had a reply from fiat, copied below.

Thank you for contacting the Fiat Information Centre.

In regards to your query, the maximum towing weight for a 1996 Fiat Ducato
chassis is 2000kg.

I hope this information has been helpful. If you have any other questions
or need further advice, we invite you to contact us by replying to this
email or calling on our international freephone number, 00800 3428 0000
(choosing option 2). We are here to help Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

Alternatively, our website is packed full of useful information detailing
our range of products and services. I have included the web address below
for your convenience.

Kind regards,

Kenny

Fiat Brand Ambassador

Have to say I was quite impressed with the service, considering the van is 14 years old.

Hi Winger.
We have a Ducato 1.9TD, 1998, Mobilvetta body.
A sticker in the driver's door jamb (converter's?) gives 3200 as both gross and train wieghts.
The plate in the engine bay (Fiat's?) gives 3200 as the gross and 4800 as the train wt.
Towing 1600kg is, I think, a little more realistic for a 1.9.
Cheers

You must make sure you vehicle has a plate fitted with your train weight on, as Pappa John says, not all manufacturers allow a tow weight. Should you be stopped with no weight plate or certification showing, you will be in deep trouble.

If you get onto the makers, and ask then if they have a towing capacity, they will be hgappy to help, either tell you where the plate can be found or give you proof in writing.

It could very well be that you cannot tow with that model. Best way to explain this is the Ford Ka - when this was built, ford never had it submiited any towing capacity or capability - so when it was safety tested and authorised for production, no towing capacity was ever given - thus no Ford Ka can tow a trailer, or have a tow bar fitted.

Whatever you do, make sure you have prrof - no prrof, then stay on the safe side until you can find some. Never assume, especially with VOSA!

got to agree here.....2000kg train limit for a 2800kg van is pushing it a bit even though fiat confirmed the train weight.
