Simple Q - why are some French motorways tolled but others not? And for that matter some parts of the same motorway free, others peaged? Seems no rationale for it, but assume there must be a national, company or regional policy? Thought it might be to recoup the cost, but having travelled the A75 for nowt [apart from the Milau viaduct fee] which must have cost a fortune to build I figure it can't be so. Anyone know?

Some parts of toll motorway are free when they bypass large towns, presumably to keep the traffic out of the town.
A75 is an excellent motorway and I have no idea why it's free, though I'm not complaining.

A75

The French government sponsored and built the A75 to provide a guaranteed route to the south west allowing economic development through the area. They committed to the road being toll free with the exception of the Lot crossing at Millau.
