Some useful sites used for the Italian Job 2.
The route, straight down France, round the Med, down to Sorrento back via Garda, Austria (toll free) Germany, Netherlands and Belgium.

Troys: Camping Municipal. Usual excellent French municipal campsite, park with trees, swimming pool, supermarket next door.

Grenoble:Les 3 Pucells. Within walking distance of the excellent cheap tram system. Swimming pool. Bit cramped. Don't miss cable car to La Bastille.

Castellane: Down Route Napoleon. Muicipal car park/aire. Next town. Good stopover. Divert to see Gorge du Verdon.

Diana Marina. Camping Oasis Park. A crude but huge cheap and effective private site. All essentials. Short walk to lovely town.

Pisa: Camping Village Tore Pendente. Nice quality site with pool within easy walk of the tower and town.

Florence: Camping Michaelangelo. Perfect site to visit Florence. Steep walk down, get the bus back. Lovely views.

Rome: Camping Tiber. On the river to the north. Free bus to local train station then into Rome. All facilities on site but not much within walking distance. Italian railways are staggering good value.

Sorrento. Camping International Nube d'Argento. Few minutes walk into town. Could not get a more convenient site BUT take ant powder or buy at local shops. All facilities. Pool a bit deep ! Food good.

Tivoli: Muncipal car park or rubbish dump. Free by the river. The place Italians dump their rubbish but a short walk to a wonder of the world Villa d'Este.

Pesciera del Garda: The ultimate town for "doing" Garda, Verona, Venice, even Milan thanks to mainline railway station. Normally would use the delightful Camping Butterfly but full so used Camping Cappuccino. Not got a pool, so Butterfly wins there but even more convenient for walking into the lovely town. Mega restaurant outside the gate. One gate gives direct access to beach.

Prad am Stilfsejoch: Camping Sagemuhle. Totally German speaking area but in Italy. Lovely site, pool. sauna glorious area. This is the launch point for the Reschen Pass to Austria/Germany. One of Europe's most magnificent passes. Toll Free.

Fussen: Camping Brunnen, just outside on the lake. Good cycling and the mega sight Schloss Neuschwanstein. Bit of a midge problem right by the lake.

Valkenburg: Citycamp Den Driesch. As close as you can get to the cute old town. Easy walk to town and it's many attractions.

Bruges: Municipal camping by the main canal and yacht club. Close to main station. Next to coach park. Ticket on entry, pay on foot exit. Power included. Charming old town. Sort of miniature Amsterdam.

As a PS to the root message. Those who fancy Italy and think it's a long way, it isn't. I have Google Maps routing Calais to Pesciera del Garda with a fine two stop strategy at 757 miles. For the suvverners round here that's like doing Scotland. Now Scotland takes some beating but handsomely beaten it is by this trip.

Austria toll free?

It's getting more and more difficult to avoid the dreaded "Go" box, because the authorities are making a lot of other roads forbidden to vehicles over 3.5 tons.
The best solution, in my opinion, is simply to avoid the place completely and use Switzerland.

Stayed at the site in Sorrento, access is tight if aproching from the north/town best to go past turn round and come back at it down a ramp on the left and round a hairpin to continue down to reception, the other negitive was the olive trees that scratch the van windows does this sound like the same site Brian ? i did like the location though and would stay again Gray. :ROFLMAO:

That's the one. By the time you've driven that far in Naples traffic you're capable of anything.

This was deliberately scenic going. By far the quickest is given by Google Maps and just two stops, Metz and Lucerne get you there efficiently. You do have to pay the Swiss their dues but it's worth it.

Can I add -
a lovely Plat du jour in the restaurant in Castellane town square. 12Euros .
Sorrento is a wondeful town.

Bourg en Bresse municipal campsite 100 yards to supermarket and shop complex. Good showers and good campsite restaurant .

Massively expensive option if you are just passing through and you are towing

A vignette is needed for both the van AND what ever you are towing, each one being €27.00 ( well it was last year.. so it is probably more now )

€54 to use their roads for a few hours is extortionate .. and of course begs the question why we and other EU countries do not charge the swiss the same amount when using roads outside their borders !
