Quite often I find myself wanting to do symbols such as ¢ or €. Recently I have been needing to do I²C, ½ and Ω.

Here is how to do it without using a symbol insert program.

Hold the Alt key down and hit number 5 for ½
Here are a few more.
ALT+c for ¢
ALT+4 for €
ALT+SHIFT+0 for ° (As in °C)
ALT+SHIFT+R for ®
ALT + SHIFT + C for ©

There are loads more but these are the most useful for me...

PS: I forgot to mention this should use the RIGHT ALT key marked ALT Gr on some keyboards
LEFT ALT doesn't work.

That's useful to know but when using an Android tablet as I am at the moment, the Swift keyboard, which is a free download, has a good range of symbols. $€¥¢¤©®[] {} <>÷\|¦×§¶¬«™~» ^°¿¡ and so on. :)
It can get a bit out of hand though if you install extra language support as I have so you can access things like ñ and ê as it also then uses those languages for the spellchecker, which can make it fun.

AH, I didn't realise this tip might be OS sensitive sorry..

I am on Linux and I thought these key combo's would be industry standard. Guess I was wrong on that one :(

I use this method on my HP laptop, BUT, I need to use the numeric pad on the right. I always do so when writing in French.

Nope - still nothing. I vaguely remember in the olden days you used to get symbols by pressing Alt with a three figure number from the pad, that could have been in DOS or WP though lol.

I don't have a key marked "Alt" on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4...

But I do have one marked "Fire Extinguisher".

Have cleaned up the dirty cow yet?
I'm in France at the moment and not due back until the end of the week. Only have an iPad here so can't really do any admin work from here.

Thank for the key sequence tips, I'll print them out and pin them up when I get home.

I have a mouse mat with the options on it. A selection is : -
Alt 130 - é Alt 133 - à
Alt 138 - è Alt 132 - ä
Alt 136 - ê Alt 131 - â
Alt 137 - ë

One which isn't shown is Alt 0128 - €

The options for the capitals with accents are also included.
I must have bought it from https://shop.linguascope.com/search?q=mouse+mat along with other items to help our grandchildren with their French, probably about 12+ years ago.

Working through all the servers at the moment.

I am not panicking too much as the race condition being utilised in the wild is not operational on Centos 6 as /proc/self/mem is not writable.

Still doing the updates one at a time though. I have quite a few servers to get through for my clients.

in windows 10 right click the taskbar and click on show touch keyboard button. then when you need a symbol, just left click on the keyboard icon in the tray and click &123. switch between panes by clicking the > or < buttons

You can probably get them using the Alt + code method. This works easiest on a keyboard with a separate numeric keyboard but you may find on your laptop there are numeric keys but they will need another button pressed to make them work. :)

If my memory serves me right, in ye olde days of DOS, you could hold CTRL key and press the ASCII code and the relevant character was typed :)

I wanted an easier solution than remembering a bunch of codes. The ones listed above I have memorised quite easily.

None of these work on my Toshiba laptop on Win10.

Alt+0189 brings up an MS Office feedback menu. o_O

As mentioned above, you have to use the number pad, it looks like some machines are picky about whether it's the left or right Alt button :cautious: and if I remember right Toshiba have a strange use of their Fn key
