We are thinking of spraying the front panels of our Hymer B524 2005 as no matter what i try the shine on them is useless does anyone recommend a paint shop in the essex area or within easy reach.

Article in this months MMM where the shine on old m/h panels was improved by spraying over with a clear lacquer its in the old timers bit. I would want to try it on an out of sight bit first and it would need good prep but might be a lot cheaper than a pro job it really depends what your m/h is worth and whether it would make future spraying harder if it didn't work (I suspect it would just be a matter of sanding down as all metallics have a lacquer on anyway. It would be very important to mask areas not being coated very well!!

2005 the Gelcoat could be quite oxidised and need a good cutting back with rotary polisher and somebody who knows what they are doing, otherwise if you are going to get it painted it will need an etching primer first to get a good bond.

Worth going to a good body mod shop and get a proper job done, you'll have to live with it.

Farecla Gel Coat restorer is great for removing oxidisation, Colinite to restore and maintain shine afterwards.

I agree, Farecla is what I use and it develops a good shine on the front and back mouldings.

Have you thought of a vehicle wrap company?
They will quote on a panel to a full vehicle and offer a choice of colours and standards of wrap.
Maybe worth comparing with painting, plus shouldn't cause issues with wrapping on plastic/fibreglass

I agree with @funflair, It would be cheaper to let someone have a go at 'mopping it' first. But get someone who knows what they're doing, its quite easy to burn through the pain apparently.

Would agree but it's not paint that will be burnt through but gel coat which on Hymer is reasonably thick but care should still be taken if using a polisher.

If you do go down the route of painting, look for a commercial vehicle paint sprayer, they will have a booth big enough, most car paint shops are too small, both booths and even clearance through access doors. But as has been suggested using a good cutting paste may well get a result but also, again as suggested, using a professional with experience is important as you can "burn" the gelcoat with fast buffers. You will find experienced boat valets will work with this problem all the time and may be a good start point.

There are several parking areas in South London where it will be done for free if you park for a couple of days. You might even get a 'Banksy' on it!

Agree with Michael find a good boat repair guy, what they can do with GRP is amassing, even if it has gone too far for recutting (unlikely) they can re-gel coat it bring it back like new.

not so newbie anymore - since 2016
Being in Essex, finding a marine GRP specialist would be easy, if you are stuck with finding someone I am sure if you give Boats.co.uk (01702 258885) a ring they would be happy to recommend someone they trust.

I would expect you would get it polished and waxed for less than £200, which would be significantly less than a paint job.

Running a mop over oxidised GRP isn't hard but the art is in making sure there are no burn marks, swirl marks or holograms caused when doing it and that takes practice, knowledge and the right kit. (y)
