I really find this almost impossible to believe....

The £1002 Penzance to Thurso fare was unearthed in a survey by rail expert Barry Doe, who said that the price of long-distance journeys had risen by up the three times the level of inflation since privatisation in the mid-1990s.
Mr Doe told the Evening Standard newspaper that even the £1,002 ticket had been available for £486 as recently as September 2008.
Three train companies share the 1,700 mile (2,736km) return trip - First Great Western, Cross Country and Scotrail.

so I don't know where the £1,000 fare comes from ..

    Here is the source Jim.

I would never dream of posting anything like this if I couldn't find evidence to back it up. If you put UK £1000 railfare into google there are loads more references.

    Hi Doug

never thought you dreamt it up..

I'm just a skeptic who challenges everything I see posted on the net..

anyway, I did another fare search for the exact route and it's still way short of £1,000.. albeit it's not a 'walk-on' fare.. maybe this is how MPs fiddle expenses .. ?

    2nd class £244
    1st class £374

I was sure the return fare published was for a "walk on" 1st Class Return fare from Penzance to Kyle of Localsh, and was made even more startling by the fact that the first 100 or so miles, and the last stage from Inverness to Kyle of Localsh there was no 1st Class facilities available. But I agree, when that is searched on The Trainline, the highest I can make it go up to is £876.

Mind you, £876 is scary, all the same.:Eeek:

    Cheaper to fly.

FlyBe operate from Newquay to Wick (only 20 miles SE of Thurso).
