Well I guess that's one backdoor way to increase sales.

I have lifetime maps on my GO500 (+1Gb SD card) but that will end as the device won't be able to accept the size of the maps, effectively ending the devices lifetime as far as TomTom are concerned.

I certainly won't be buying any TomTom device in future, mainly due to the excessively long download times on a relatively slow (4meg) connection speed.
Did a map update two days ago ....over 5 hours Inc upload to device.

Once it fails I'll look at better devices.

We sold our Camper Tom-Tom, simply because Co Pilot and others work over a range of devices, even off line if you pay. I couldn't justify keeping it. We also like to use maps.

I could of course use the inbuilt satnav in my car.....but the map disc is dated 2006 and at £400 for an updated disc....updated but NOT up to date (2012).....nobody could warrant the price.

TomTom bought Atlas(?) one of the major map providers so they will survive. Cars will end up with built in SatNav as ICE becomes cheaper and further integrated into cars. As pappajohn states the price for updates will need to come down as well.

Given my experience of TomTom this year I wouldn't touch one of their current range with a barge pole.
I might consider them in future but only if they fix the holes that so many have complained about on their forum and introduce update software which works properly.

We are buying a new SAt Nav in the next week or so.

So without bamboozling me with tehnology.
What do your recommend us to get
We have a 4.5 tonne tag axle.

Please dont fall out with each other over what's best or worst
Just clearly state what you advise.

Cheers Kev

I have the Camper and Caravan model and have map updates until Dec 2017. I will be OK until this time and have already decided to move across to Garmin next year as Tom Tom have discontinued this model and charge for the map updates and live services. A rip off!

I have the camper edition which I am sure came with free lifetime map updates not chargeable, i can see if the maps for this wont fit it will be an issue but currently they were free for as long as tomtom provide them.

I cant remember off the top of my head what size the maps were but i will take a look when i get home and check, it may be that they are sending the emails out in chunks and i have yet to receive them. :(

As you probably know (but others might not) 'lifetime' is defined in the small print as product lifetime rather than your lifetime.

We have a couple of Go 500s which we have no complaints about so far. One way to save memory space is to opt for the smaller maps without the 3D buildings on them - it's the only way I can fit the CCI Aire POI files on the internal memory. Downloading the map takes forever though - I usually leave it downloading overnight.

To be honest people should think carefully about buying any tomtom sat nav's as their customer support is truly awful and from this experience alone i will never buy another tomtom satnav once the ones i have are no longer working or able to update. Just my opinion though gained from my own experience with their support.

A few years ago I updated my maps and went off to France - a day or two into the trip there were no voice announcements - makes hard work of junctions..any way once home I contacted TomTom to ask for help - several days were sent bouncing emails back and forth with an assistant who asked to uninstall then reinstall etc - then the post code only had four digits! After day 5 and still not working they asked if I had tried turning up the volume? ARGH! :ROFLMAO: Of course I had - but it was a broken speaker - They offered to fix it as a valued customer for £91 +vat :xrofl:
I took a risk and dismantled it - took speaker out ...and found a 12v speaker at a local model railway shop for £6 - Fixed!:xThumb:

They have been ripping customers of for years with the map updates, have not had one for that reason, they would not have made this decision if it were not for the fact that WiFi as come into its own, and does Automatic updates for maps on several different platforms inc ipads, smart phones and lots of dedicated sat navs, to say it is all down to memory is a load of old cods wallop, they had no choice.:xsmile:

Forget about a dedicated sat nav and get a small tablet instead then you have the choice of running the sat nav system you want rather than being restricted to a unit that is purely a sat nav with one provider. We've tried TomTom units, and also TomTom on a tablet, as well as Co-pilot and Sygic and so far Sygic has proved to be far superior to the others! Using a table obviously means it can be used for other things as well and when used as a sat nav you have the benefit of a nice large screen - we find that using it in portrait mode gives the best 'view' ahead.

Well that's up to the individual, I'm quite happy with the cheapo TomTom that cost £80 or £90 a couple of years ago or more, it's seen me through many thousands of miles, and has been updated easily and successfully as and when, free of charge. I do not find my tablet as convenient. Horses for courses.
