March 21, 2016 is only 3 months away. I know that, so do the DVLA or is it DVLC. In any event my Hymer has a plate on the side that mentions 3,500 kg and also mentions 5,500 kg. I think it refers to unloaded and loaded. Am I ok to still drive it or do I need to take a test?

I would reckon no you wont be able to with out doing something, it is almost certainly a PHGV, but as above, your V5 is the key

As @DavidG58 posted . The 3500kg will be gvw and the 5500kg most likely the gtw.

Btw you can now , 90days before expiry, submit your application to maintain your grandfathers rights to your C1+E licence group. You will need a medical and eye test .
If you decide to relinquish C1+E and renew without it you can continue to drive your 3500kg motorhome .

On our 2nd MH now a AutoTrail Savannah which we're absolutely delighted with
Hi I'm 70 in Feb 16 just renewed my driving licence. If I wanted to continue to drive over 3500kgs I needed a optician test to prove I could read at the appropriate distance. I am very lucky and in extremely good health and did not need a medical as well. As it is our MH is 3400 and we have no intention to change it for anything bigger so my licence is now limited to 3500kgs

Just looked on my V5 and it says my revenue weight is 3500 kg. That makes me think I'm ok.

Surely it is quite straight forward isn't it? If you want to drive a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight which is over 3500 kgs and you are over 70 years of age, then you have to take the necessary tests to do so, if your vehicle is at or under 3500 kgs and you are over 70 years of age then you just renew your driving licence in the normal way, and renewal has to take place every three years from then on.

You can get any LGV entitlement back at any time on completion of the necessary medical forms, after passing the medical and eyesight tests first obviously.

This includes the C1 +E entitlement that many have due to 'grandfather' rights.

You can drive a vehicle up to 3500 kg on an ordinary car license, when 70years old or over. This is renewed every three years.
If you wish to drive or continue to drive over 3500kg, then you have to have a medical including an eye test, cost by your doctor £100 approx.

Bernard you say 3500 & 5500kg, 3500kg would be your maximum gross laden weight, the 5500 would be your gross train weight. There is a restriction on how much you can tow if you passed your test after 1997, but your vehicle is capable of a total road weight of 5500kg. Therefore your van fully laden and the weight of towed trailer.

Hope this is of some help.

Without trying to be negative I am just amazed their are people driving their motorhomes without understanding their weight limits or licence requirements.

Although it does apply to myself, I was wondering about the younger owners that want a bigger van that's 3500kg, do they have to take a TEST on a C, HGV, class 12 tonner with a medical exam and then keep it going as an HGV licence for commercial vehicle with all the BS about CPD's etc or can they take a C1 test in a motorhome over the 3500kgs and get just a C1, I know you take a test to get an E trailer over 750kgs for vans and cars etc but if you have that do you then need to do all it again for C1+ E, which most of us have as Grandfathers rights, but this seems a very difficult way of sorting out as perceived danger on the road. If it is that difficult then the heavier motorhomes will die out as most a very near the mark anyway and need the extra bit of capacity . There really out to be a, LEISURE VEHICLE CLASS to cover Motorhomes and horse boxes etc. up to a certain size but over the present 3500 kg limit.

Its called ignorance of the law and is not an excuse in court.

The charge would be "driving a vehicle other than in accordance with your licence" and will result in a fine and penelty points.
You will also be uninsured.

Just a C1 test up to 8250kg inc trailer.
THEN a C1+E for a heavy trailer...
Train limit 11000kg
CPC is not required for non commercial use.
