Is a tandem not too wide to carry on the back of a PVC .. ?

A tandem is 2.4 - 2.5 mt long

Fiat Ducato van is 1.8 mt wide..

do you plan to take a wheel off ?

You can get special connectors which will allow the frame to be split in two. But they are expensive and the frame will need to be resprayed afterwards.

Friends of ours carried their Tandem on the back of PVC and across the back of the car, yes it is quite wide but removing the front wheel shortens it conciderably and even more if you take out the back wheel and don't have mudguards, they used the Fiamma bike rack that was on when they bought it and just extended the rails a bit and put a quick release skewer in a block to hold the front forks.

Ours goes in the garage(y)

Good point @DBK they are called S&S couplings and you can buy a bike with them already fitted JD Tandems at Gargave are a good place to start.
