So... after hiring 'vans in Canada and New Zealand in the past, and having developed an odd tendency to buy motorhome magazines over the last few years, I've taken the plunge and bought a second hand van.
I try to work out what the justification is.. So far the best I've come up with is that the dog is too old to stay in a tent (not me, of course, the dog).
I've bought a 2007 Weinsberg Imperiale 600 MD (badge-engineered Knaus Sun Ti600 LF with a couple of differences) and at the weekend took it on an initial test trip to a clifftop CL on the coast. Happily, the Devon weather provided torrential rain combined with high winds, the resulting wraparound-spray/washing machine effect at least provided a good opportunity to check for leaks and thankfully none were found.
The dog did, however, look somewhat unimpressed by my decision to leave a nice centrally-heated house to spend the night in a tin box in a field.
