We are in Annecy, France looking over the lake with snow topped mountains behind the lake lovely , but the reason I posted this was, I saw some swallows flying around the van, first time this year does that mean summer is here?

It's all to do with the air speed velocity of unlaiden Swallows and if it's an African or European Swallow ?

7 years campers before that
we have swifts that nest each year in our eaves we have several friends who we have to tell when they arrive so for us they are the first sign of summer
most years we get one or two that miss the eaves and fly in through the windows

Since April 1846 but have always camped.
Here in Meribel in the French alps and have just seen some house martins around. Considering there is still plenty of snow around then quite amazing. I just hope they manage to make it back to my house in York before they get shot down in France .! We normally have at least 20 nests around the house which thankfully prevents me from painting! Lol!

Lets not forget that Swallows don't have access to Meteo France.....

They set off from their over wintering grounds based on the conditions they have there and not on the conditions that are on route or at their final destination. Also these birds probably set off 3wks ago.

We get the same pattern here: first to arrive are Black Kites, then Red Kites, then the Storks and finally the Swallows which also arrived last Sunday. April is about right as it must be getting quite warm in SA now.

Hi,
Camped at Haws last wk-end, still very deep snow on the Hills and lanes.
Locals informed us that they were cut off for 4 days a week ago, they had very bad drifting snow. Temp in the north still below freezing at night.
Roll on Summer, Best Regards Mac

Just entering Spring I would say...even if a little late!

Came home Friday and one of the ducks was being followed around by her brood - 10 in all.

Unfortunately this morning only 7 behind - we did try to save one who had been laying on it's back after falling down a step, but I fear it was too late. It wasn't looking too good and was very weak, I fear it may not be there when we get back.

Summer will be here soon - but there will no doubt be alot more rain first!
