My base vehicle is a 2009 Ducato 2.2 100 Multijet. It has done 6,000miles. On a cold start there is a screeching from the engine bay that then disappears when warmed up a bit. The brakes also squeal when coming to a standstill.

These are of course covered by warranty but I would like to be able to tell them what I suspect the problems are. Can those more mechanically competent than myself please advise?

Screeching could be:

Fan belt
Water pump belt
Power steering belt
Alternator belt

or

Alternator bearings
Water pump bearings

Brakes squealing could be:

Rust on discs - will go away after a couple of miles
Discs glazed - Try braking heavily a few times
Pads worn down to rivets
A bit of grit twixt pads and disc

I hope this helps.

the underbonnet noise sounds like a slack/slipping alternator drive belt....
cold cranking pulls a lot of power from the battery and the alternator is working very hard to replace it and because of the heavy alternator load a slack belt will slip and screach until some power is replaced.

the brake noise will probably be lack of brake grease/copper ease on the back of the brake pads or the anti-sqeal shims werent fitted at the factory (unlikely)
