Since the onus is on the authorities to prove their case, I guess that would include proving that your unladen weight is over 3050kg. I'm not sure how easy that would be.

In a police state quite easy "follow me to the weighbridge and unload everything".

Can't see that happening here. But they may have a database of unladen weights somewhere.

It's unladen weight as has already been said and as unladen weight isn't recorded anywhere for motorhomes (it isn't the same thing as MIRO) it's an unenforceable law.

Please forgive me if this is wrong, but isn’t the weights of these vehicles on the vehicle somewhere. I know my Transit / Vauxhall’s have GVW and unladen weights on the inside of it’s doors ? They also have axle and towing weights too..

Would 3.05 tonnes relate to the pre decimal 3 tons? If i remember when in my teens in the early 60s before HGV licences 3 ton and under could be driven if you were younger than 21,,,anything heavier you needed to be 21 and over. Many Bedfords Fordsons etc had ulw around 2 ton 18 cwt so could be driven by younger drivers. BUSBY..

Just idly thinking about this the other day (whilst cruising in traffic actually) I recalled that the published PAYLOAD for our van was 465kg. With a MAUW of 3500kg, that puts the unladen weight at 3035kg i.e. under 3050kg so no probs.

Except that in common with a number of others, who found that after all the goodies were loaded they were overweight, I had the MAUW uprated to 3850kg. So going to a weighbridge and unloading the extras would be an interesting exercise as quite a few of them are fixed! Which now makes me think - is my unladen weight now 3385kg? Or is it still the original?

Talk about a minefield! Think I'll fit a 50mph governer.

.
Nope, the difference between MAM and the payload is the MIRO (Mass in Running Order) which is the unladen weight plus allowances for driver, fuel, water & gas amounts which can vary between manufacturers.
So a MAM of 3500 with a payload of 465 less allowances of say 195 would give an unladen weight of 2840 kg

It's 3.05 tonnes maximum unladen weight
It goes back to imperial measurements 3 TON unladen A lot of 3500kg vans ARE under this weight when empty not MIRO but empty.
You might have an argument with a traffic cop over it but worth a try if ACTUALLY stopped for speeding.

Living the dream.
Yes providing the gross weight is 3500kg or less.
Yes, my lads can't drive our MoHo as it's heavier than that. They would have to strip it out then it's @ 3250kgs. Driver, half full with fuel, one gas bottle, half a tank of fresh water and nowt else.

It's the plated weight that governs who can drive not the actual weight.

I have just had cause to check on UK speed limits for a job

Went to the govt web site and was shocked to see the speed limit reduction to 50 for single track, 60 for dual track and 70 for motorways is related not to vehicles over 3.5t but over 3.05t

Now that means an awful lot of motorhome owners in vans plated at 3.5t have been thinking they are fine at 70 on a dual carriageway when in fact they are limited to 60 mph

I am sure I am well behind the times and more people know this than less, but thought it worth a heads up

John.
If you were checking in relation to a commercial vehicle beware that they class all vehicles under 7.5 tons ( except car derived vans ) in the 50,60,70 category as I found out to my cost in my transit custom.

Type of vehicle Built-up areas mph(km/h) Single carriageways mph (km/h) Dual carriageways mph (km/h) Motorways mph(km/h)
