This Sparrow Hawk took a blackbird right outside our motor home door
Not fussy are they they will take stuff from anywhereoh:
By the way nice picture:thumb:
Yes He/She didn't flinch when we tried to shoo it away but it was already to late for the poor blackbird
Same thing in my garden 3 years ago, i ran through the patio doors to save the blackbird. 4 strides from the doors + twang went my Archilles tendon snapped like a twig. In pot for 13 weeks but re-potted every 2 weeks to move my foot angle a few cm's. The best bit was when the German nurse who 1st saw me on admittance to the hospital said i deserved my injury as i should leave nature alone + let creatures eat each other :Eek!:.
Good old N.H.S.
Read about that on your blog Maureen and yes a very good photo :thumb:
Where did you take it Maureen?
Great photo Maureen
That's a female Sparrow hawk and it's about twice the size of the male and a lot more colourfull plumage .I wouldn't stop them killing their prey it's their nature and how they survive .I keep doves and this afternoon there were 4 Peregrines circling above.i beleive they could be 2 adults and 2 youngsters. Have lost doves to both Peregrines an S/Hawks in the past .Don't like it happening but nothing much I can do about it.
we have a bird similar to the style in the photo only its front is a beatiful butterscotch tan and its back slate grey. It parks up on nearby roof tops then swops down on pidgeons on one occasion during the chase both hit the patio windows I went out no way was the bird going to let go of the pidgeon and was not bothered with me stood next to it while it had its supper. Had the impression if i had tried to pick it up or stoke it, the beak or talons might have come into play.
good news it goes for pidgeons and not the wild birds.
Eileen hope you enjoy the blog. John it was taken at Tregarton Holiday Park Nr Mevagissey 8/07/09. Stagman thanks for telling me it was a female
Hawk video Clip
Just a short clip from a much larger video
Filmed her through my shed window, so may be not as clear as it should be, took her about 20 minutes to devour a whole pidgeon, bones and all.
BRILLIANT just Brilliant Sherpa
