My black Lab picked up an injury whilst running after balls at Crystal Palace park last week and I pretty much rested him up during my stay at Cornish Farm, after getting my security sorted by Vanbitz.

We dropped down to Cornwall for a short break and slowly started to build up his walks and a bit of swimming, but as his limp didn't improve further, I brought him home where I thought the space and comfort would help.

A vet's visit confirmed a torn cranial cruciate ligament that has caused a misalignment of his joint. Surgery is required at a date to be set, then 2 - 4 months recuperation.

Short walks of 10 mins maximum until his surgery is conducted, with no running or jumping, then that long recuperation = no trips away until he is on the mend :(

We had daughter's dog on short walks following a neck injury. It was terrible as get to end of road and turn round to try and return and he would just stand his ground and look longingly at his normal route. Couldn't pull him home as didn't want to put pressure on any joints so it was a mental tug of war until he realised he wasn't going to get his way.
Wishing you and your Lab well and lots of patience for both of you!

titanium cage inserted for the bone to grow around, as you say a long recoup but as good as gold now

We love watching SuperVet on TV and are always amazed at how quickly dogs recover from major surgery - much quicker than humans. Hope your Lab is soon back to his old self.

Our beagle had a hernia op a couple of weeks ago at our local vet in France, we were told no vigorous excessive or rough play for him till the stitches were out.
Have you ever tried to stop a beagle jumping on the bed or sofa or stretching up to the table edge to steal food?
Anyway, it didn't stop us going away in the van for a week, at least he sleeps all the time we are driving.
Good luck with your dogs op, hope everything goes well.

I'm sorry to hear that Kingham. I do hope all goes well for your lovely doggie and that he is on the mend soon. Our dog Mimi had a similar problem and her recovery from surgery has been greatly helped by the local dog physiotherapist and weekly sessions of hydrotherapy. If you look in the "Photo of the day" thread at page 496 you will see our beloved Mimi in the hydrotherapy pool : it has helped her enormously. Don't tell our Lord and Master Jim that it was actually hydrotherapy and not a swimming lesson as in the caption or I'll be sent to my home town! If there is such a facility near you, do give it a go if your dog's vet agrees. Ours was all covered by the pet insurance. Anyway, all the best for a good and speedy outcome. P.S. For those who haven't guessed - and I'm sure you all have - my home town is of course . . . . . Coventry!

Thank you all (y).... I was planning to spend the summer school holiday period at home, renovating the house. I'll just bring that schedule forward and take a more relaxed and leisurely approach to the thousand and one jobs.

About 5 years ago our springer ruptured both of his cruciate ligaments. He had major surgery at a specialist vetinary hospital near Winchester. He had a procedure called TPLO surgey. (Thank god for insurance). The hardest part was the rehab which had to be very gradual over 6 months, try telling a springer "only 5 minute walkies"!
Anyway, now you wouldn't know what he had been through but it was stressed to us that the recovery period must be slow and gentle. If you google it you will see that it is a common issue.
Good luck to you and the lab.

Lola did exactly the same about 5 years ago, we were faced with the same extended issues you mention, including carrying her down the garden for a wee etc

For those that haven't met Lola, she is a nearly 50kg Bernese Mountain dog, totally impractical to pick her up let alone carry her

Our vet was scheduled to do the op, but I did some internet research as was not at all happy that we could physically cope with the moving her around

Found a vet that had exactly the same issue himself with his Bernese and decided to find a better way to do the OP, talked to him, my vet allowed the referral and we drove to Cornwall for the op, same basic idea but no recovery time

Left her at vets one morning, op done and we were called to say all gone well and to come in the following morning as planned to collect her.

08:30 arrived to find her and the vet walking round the car park, we were warned to control her walks and not to let her jump into or out of the car for couple of weeks, but the only real sign of her operation was her shaved leg

I will look up the vets details, it was even a cheaper op, although we also have insurance, but nearly £1000 cheaper

:):)(y)(y)

we were also told the other leg would almost certainly go soon after due to the strain of really only using one leg for a bit, and it did, a few months later, so we went back down for the same procedure on the other leg, equally miraculous recovery time

Hi Ken, so sorry to hear you news. It may be worth investigating David idea as something similar happened to Shadow the younger of our two Shepherds

We want to s specialist in Exeter who specialises with Shepherds and we had to tie him down after we picked him up

Admitted this was an elbow problem, but the recouperation time can differ greatly with different approaches

Sorry to hear about your dog, I agree about the hydrotherapy - the pic with the dog that was mentioned made me smile when I saw it as I have an almost identical one of Tess. Hers was a shoulder injury that just wouldn't heal.

Davidg58 suggestion sounds worth following up though.
Best of luck

Thanks so much for the info and had I not been 400 miles away, with a 'state of the art' and respected animal hospital 5 minutes away, I would have been tempted. The thought of an 800 mile round trip, especially coming back with a post-operation dog, is a bit too long in the car for him and on top of which, we made all of the referral arrangements yesterday.

Ken.

Really hope it goes well, I wish I could recall the name of the op Lola had, but the recovery was truly miraculous compared to what we had been warned with the other process

In essence they all achieve the same, Lola has some kind of cage, instead of whatever the 'normal' option was as far as I recall (y)

@Kingham : an update on my earlier post. Our dog Mimi has now been signed off by the physiotherapist and the vet. Result happiness! We can now take her proper walks again. As others have said, the recovery is a lengthy and careful process but I am certain the hydrotherapy was a major help and it was all covered by the pet insurance. We also had a bit of fun along the way : especially if the physiotherapist was a bit slow putting the towel on Mimi when she got out of the pool and she shook herself dry! I do hope all goes well. It's heartbreaking when our pets are in any sort of distress. You may need to be patient though. Mimi was a bit nervous at first and it took two or three sessions before she got used to it but she then enjoyed it.

Sorry, only just seen this. Hope he's feeling a little better and is soon on the road to recovery. It's horrid when they are poorly.
When does he have his op?
And please remind us of his name...

I've just asked Zack if he's offended that you forgot his name already and he says a treat next time you meet him will put things right

We're back at the Vet's on Monday and hoping to have a confirmed date for surgery.

@Stretto Boy Thanks for the update and I'm pleased Mimi has made a full recovery. It gives me confidence that with the correct treatment, normality will eventually return.

It will! Unfortunately there are no short-cuts, so time and patience are key. But, as we are know, time flies so these miserable times will soon be a distant memory and you and Zack will be off motorhoming together before you know it. Please bear in mind that, apart from two or three weeks after her operation, we could still take away Mimi with us. We just had to be very careful getting her in and out of the van and walks were very restricted but that was so whether at home or away. Mimi was small enough to lift in and out of the van. That may be more difficult with Zack (our three previous dog's were all GSDs so I know what it's like) but a plank or bespoke dog ramp might be the way to go. Good luck : hope it all goes well. Do update us with progress . P.S. Mimi sends her best wishes to Zack for a speedy recovery! She says with loving owners who care for their dogs, as obviously you do, it's really not too bad.

I know, I know. I'm completely soft in the head! Funsters who don't "do" dogs won't get it. Most, if not all, dog-lovers will.

Just to update, Zack has been dropped off for his surgery, but the vet confirmed that his left leg also needs surgery :(

He won't do both legs at the same time and has suggested letting today's procedure heal for six weeks, then get Zack back in for the other leg, so it's going to be a long, drawn out recuperation over the summer for the poor little fella :(

Shame about the second leg but there will be no stopping Zack once both ops have been done and he is fully recovered. In the meantime you'd better spend time in the gym so that you'll be able to keep up with him!
