Haven't visited Spain for quite a while but we are visiting Spain 10 days time for just 5 days, driving from central France to a campsite just north of Barcelona and then via Huesca across to SW France, all more or less on motorway or main roads. We are 1 day each into and out of Spain and 3 days in Barcelona.

Quite taken with some of the Rioja wines and would like to buy 10 or 20 bottles. Given our itinerary, would it be a local supermarket near the campsite or are there places along the way that may have more choice / be better?

    Thanks

We use the Mercadona supermarkets. Always get a good selection there.

Carrefour stores often have a buy one, get one half price and 3x2 offers on a wide range of Spanish wines including Riojas. Give yourself a treat and try any of the Ribera del Duero wines, exceptional. Alternatively, Eroski carry a good range of wines, but Mercadona would be bottom of my list for choice and price.

We were very impressed with this 13 1/2 % Rioja from Mercadona at ( I think) €1.90.

We found them available in several Mercadona & Lidl stores in Spain. I know its sad taking photo's of bottles of wine but I always record the ones we like and have the phone with me when shopping to use as an 'aide memoire'

I second Ribera del Duero wines, available in Lidl and Aldi. I brought home a good selection but anything from Tamaron is very good

Lidl, Mercadonna, have some really good wines around 2 euros. Try one and if you like it buy in bulk.

A man of taste. I guess the €1 per litre boxes do not fall into your basket. But, as you can see, some FUNsters will go as far as €2 a bottle.

I was surprised by just how much you can pay for wine in Spain, similar to UK prices but no doubt a much better wine.

There are excellent wines, of all denominacións, available throughout Spain at around €4 per bottle. If visitors to Spain would be prepared to pay in euros what they pay in £'s at home then they could buy stunningly good wines....... think about it guys.

PS: @hilldweller I do occasionally buy the €1 boxes........ when I need paint stripper!!!:clap2:

Presently on a none motorhoming 4 week birding holiday in Tarifa, Lidl have some cracking local wines from 1 to 4 euros a bottle.
