south africa as one of the worlds biggest plants for building the vw vans. think there are more there than you thought. mind it is a big place. lots of 4x4 campers built there . certainly landrover and toyota landcruiser camper stomping ground. hot weather means more living outside so campers are really for sleeping and travelling.

SA campervans

Next year will be our 4th campervan holiday in SA. Plenty to choose from, we usually hire from Bobos just outside Cape Town. Not cheap but they build the vehicles themselves and in our experience they are built like tanks to whithstand the corrugated sand roads that cover much of SA. They also build specialist 4x4's for African travel. We saw one being built that must have had a 2 metre ground clearance and huge tyres filled with a liquid to prevent punctures. Converting the cost to UK pounds I think it was about £60,000 and that was only for the conversion from a flat bed truck.
2 years ago we drove from Cape Town up through SA into Namibia and on to the border of Angola, through Etosha National Park turned right into Botswana for a few days. Back down the edge of the Kalahari and into Namibia again, back to Cape Town.
Plenty of camp sites, mostly with armed guards at night, very clean, very tidy, couldn't recommend it more. No one shot us, robbed us or molested us, just watch out for the "Honey Badger" a meaner creature I have yet to find, forget your lions, leopards and so forth this critter has real attitude !

On my couple of trips to the Cape did not see any

I must admit on a couple of trips I have done to the Cape and round the garden route I doid not see what I call real motorhomes.. Landrovers with roof packs and VW's.. but not what we call motorhome.

While lots of roads are good, there were lots of bad ones as well and if you cam of the main roads, it was soon like driving in the wilds.

fantastic place South Africa.. recommend a visit to anyone. Saftey has to be considered and I have been known to run a red light at slower speeds in various cities and not stopping... but in Cape Town on the V&A I felt very safe.. even visited a shanty town .. they have even turned that in to a tourist trap. My best memory is seeing a wooden garden shed for sale as a granny annex.. or the mini buses overloaded 20 people in a 12 seater.. no sterring wheel just a spanner on the nut where the steering wheel should be. But an experiance not to be missed.

Table moutain and the 7 sisters one hell of a view as is gun hill.
