If anyone is thinking of heading to or from Spain via the Somport tunnel its closed. I had to go over the pass which has a 3.5 ton limit on it and believe me its a bit hairy to say the least, especially with a 10 ton train weight. Thank heavens for Telma retarders. It looks like its going to be closed for some time as there are concrete blocks in front of the tunnel. This is a popular route for Benidormers and the like. You have been warned.

Unless you are into extreme downhill slalom racing I wouldn't bother. It looks like its going to be closed for some time.

And that is one of the more flatter straight stretches. That photo shows tarmac on the road.

From the chaos that the approach roads are in, I cannot see it being open this side of Christmas, and then it will be closed due to bad weather. It seems after talking to a couple of truck drivers there was some form of landslide, but they have been busy with the approach roads for some time now.

Here is a good alternative route, close to the Siomport tunnel!

We have often crossed at Col de Pourtalet on the D934 (just a bit south of Somport, still driving through Pau or Oloron St Marie, staying the night at the free aire in Laruns.
It's a beautiful drive and we have had breakfast at the border!
