With a solar panel charge regulator, where does the excess charge go. Does the panel stop working or is the excess turned into heat via the regulator???

on my regulator it switches off the charge and one of the LED's then flashes, I assume that that dissipates the heat.

When the regulator cuts out, the panel is then open circuit .. ie no current flowing , no heat .. just like a battery that has been disconnected.

 I have 2 different types of regulator on my 2 Motorhome/Rv's. The RV has a Solar Boost 2000E which takes the extra voltage and converts it to extra charging amps. When charged, I can then further use the power to equalize the batteries. Otherwise it just ticks over at 13.9 volts.
The one on the Suntor is a basic regulator. Then when the batteries reach a charged state works the same as Wildman's. :thumb:
