    Hi

I had a new exhaust fitted last week . When driving less than half a mile down the road I notice a smell and the internal smoke alarm goes off. I have only driven the van about 7 miles since the exhaust was fitted. On both occasions this has happened.

is this usual with a new exhaust?

    thanks in advance

It's new........ so burning off paint, paper stickers etc, not normal to set alarm off, but I would run it a bit more to see. Is there a hole in your floor, can you smell it?

New exhausts can smoke at first but you shouldn't be getting smoke in your van. That sound wrong and potentially dangerous

    Blimey.
If smoke is getting in so are deadly exhaust fumes.

Last exhaust we had no issues, so I can't see the van having a hole or anything, we had a temp repair done on the old exhaust in France few months back when the exhaust broke in half...we had no issues and done about 700 miles or so on it....so got the new exhaust fitted last week and i notice an odor and then this smoke alarm goes off in the van, I have the drivers side window open......the co2 detector doesn't go off at all. My gut feeling is its new and giving off some smells but the smoke alarm going off makes me a bit nervous

As others have said this isn't normal or right and most smoke alarms need a reasonable amount of smoke to set them off - think burnt toast etc. Is it possible the new exhaust is touching or is very near the bodywork and what you are getting in the MH is paint burning off the inside of the body shell? Did the exhaust people leave a heat shield off?

This should not happen. I would be getting it checked asap before you suffer from the effects of it. A smoke alarm will detect what you cannot see but it is obviously there.
