hi guys some freinds of our circumstances have changed and they have a Smart car for sale.
I don't know anything about Smarts but I believe they make a good tow car ,correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway it's on a 51 plate ,done about 50000 mls .It needs something doing with the drivers side door handle ,but other than that it's a clean car.could I just pick your knowledgable brain for a rough valuation pls. What is it worth roughly.

After factoring in the possible repair and it's age/mileage your looking at about £1300. There are plenty on ebay to calculate a price. We have a 55 plate and use a trailer. This is our first year with a car and it's worked out well. We've had a few electrical problems with the Smart due to corrosion as it's over 10 now.

Hang on while I look at my watch
Depends if it's modified for towing. I recently sold my 02 plate I used as a toad with 60k on the clock for 2.2k.

It will depend on what model it is (I assume it's RHD) and the condition as well as mileage, service history etc, best to get as much info as you can and then research it on autotrader and ebay.

They are part of the Merc group however there are plenty of places to get parts, I've had several Smart cars and they are brilliant but there are certain things you have to check on, just as you do with many cars.

That year it will be a 600cc so not that sought after. It's the mileage that is significant as they are known to go bang over 50k miles. Not a lot of mechanics like them as they can be quirky to work on, so best check if there is an independent Smart garage in your area. Smarts are automotive marmite, you will either love them or hate them so have a test drive to see which side your on.

My daughter traded hers in recently, similar age and mileage to the one you're looking at, and she was I think lucky to get £800 for it.
They do suffer from a few quirky problems ....... like the door handle fault; the semi auto box going out of whack; gear teeth stripping on the rear diff and a few others including electrical glitches.
Agree with @FJmike and go test drive it and see what you think.

They tend to go 'bang' after 50k miles because the owners tend to neglect them a bit more once they get to that age and don't keep the oil topped up, in fact some owner go too far and over-fill which can cause major problems, better just to check occasionally and top up when needed.

I love them, I've had a few but my view is that it would be at best £1,000 if in really, really good condition with no faults, but down to £500 depending on what needs doing, tyres, MOT etc.

I loved mine, despite the fact the it wrecked the gearbox and destroyed the Engine!.

The cause was an electrical glitch, that Stated the car was in Neutral, and allowed it to be locked there!. Towing at 50+mph on the A1 behind 7+t of R-V, wrecked the transmission and engine!.

In fact just looked at another today!. But I want the 700cc engine at least!, the 600`s are well known for issues. Just go on any Smart Forum!. Here for a start :- http://www.evilution.co.uk/

I just spent £15k on a new one  Don't tell the wife.

I love it. I think they have come along way in the last model and Merc are doing 0% finance on them with no deposit and £99 a month for a pretty good spec. Add in no road tax and £200 a year for me to insure it with a 3 year warranty it was a no brainer. Although I pushed that price up by 50% by getting the top spec sport model.

Not driven the older model but this thing is planted to the road. I forget I am in a tiny car as the cabin is very spacious for 2 people and it has every extra going. Turning circle is that of a fork lift. Rear wheel drive. its bucket loads of fun.

As to answer your question. £600 then £200 a month to keep it running right.
Id get a new one if you can also use it as a daily.

Were sadly not towing it as there is 3 of us. Shame as it would be awesome hooked up to the Flanders mobile

A motorhome!

we are still learning
Having owned a couple ...the 700cc on a 54 plate was by far better than the latest one we had on a 60 plate!
The Latter being the MHD . Bit of a bugger for chewing up the drive belt which powers everything! When it goes...Trust me...Its like a helicopter landing on the roof!
Long and short of it is that they are superb for shopping trucks and small journeys. If you plan on comfort and longer journeys my honest opinion is ....get a cushion!
As previously mentioned..www.evilution.co.uk Excellent advice from the guys on there . It costs about a £10 to get access to all their site which is well worth it. Specialist tools are available at reduced costs too.
As regards running costs..ANy older car with 50k or above mileage, then history is essential. Bare in mind though...Full service History does not always mean what is stated? The vehicle may have gone in for a full service etc, ...does not mean its had everything done ! The stamp in the service guide is to cover the garage doing the job. Found this out with our Jag dealership. They explained that its up to the customer what he/she has done in the end.
If its a toy and a second car...get a low mileage one and as previously mentioned , 700 cc or above. The 600cc is 'tired' now, so steer clear. The advert on here with the A frame is a pretty good buy to be honest. Its worth a look!
