1]How far will we get the signal on our receiver, Cannot think of name. The Bubble dome one?

Will we get it into Italy and Spain.

2] We dont get all the channel that Geo listed on our Free to air.
Why?

Hi Galway

A Camos done I think you have, & last winter in Spain we met folks that got pictures close to Valancia. You may find Sky is not as good but many people use the other satellites you can get on in S Europe that have English channels

Hiya Keith and Jean - are you going to Lincoln???

We are going to take our Sky+ to Lincoln and see if it will work on a single LNB and try to record. If there is a problem I might invest in a twin LNB then hopefully the Sky+ will work just as it does at home??!!

When we were in Spain we could only receive news on the little suitcase satellite system, but we met a great couple in Santa Suzanna and he took us to a satallite shop and bartered!! He was great we bought a large dish, LNB and stand for 58 Euros. The picture is magic!

We are going back to Spain in September, so thats why I am trying to sort the Sky + out now.

Ginny

We only have the Sky1 package,

Hi G & M

Saw your L dish on a photo some time ago, glad you got it all working :thumb:

No not going to Lincoln ( we spend too much at the shows) doing lots on the new home but still waiting for our buyers to sell.

How long you off for & where to.

We will be off in December, all things being OK, to Conil de la Frontera on the Costa De La Luz, South of Cadiz, almost as far South as is possible on mainland Europe. We are there for Xmas & New Year then on to Portugal & the very South West near Lagos

Hi Ginny & Mike,

No not going to Lincoln (we'll only spend more money). :Eeek:

Where are you going to in September & how long for?

We wont be off until December & then as far South as we can get, for the winter. Conil de la Fronterra is on the Costa de la Luz South of Cadiz & we will be there for Xmas & New Year, After that we are off to Portugal right in the South West.

We have bought one of the new Camos Crankup flat dishes so it will be interesting to see what we can get on that down South, I can always take the small dish as we get many channels with our Sky box & card. ::bigsmile:

out of the 4 satellites i mentioned 1 is the weakest of the lot - astra 2d which carries bbc and itv - the further south you go the less likely you are to be able to get bbc and itv - hence in france and 80cm dish normaly works, but in spain (valencia to torry) a big dish (1.8 or 2.4m) is required to get bbc and itv.

edit : not a perfect map, but it goes a good indication about what dish size in spain gets good bbc and itv reception. note the word indication - meaning not exact before people say they get it on smaller dishes - this is for expat who live out ere and expect bbc and itv all day, not just random hours!

www.brymar.co.uk/info/europe_dish_size/Spain/Dish-Spain.gif

the other satellite carry the rest of the sky and other free channels and can be recieve over the magority of europe as the siganls are much stronger and focused on a wider area.

of course there are other satellites available to watch - hotbird on 13 degs astra on 19 - arabsat on 26, but you will not be able to use a sky box to get these - a sky box will only work looking at astra 28.2-5. you have to use a generic receiver to get these channels, but as they are more european based not many are dedicated english channels.

this link takes your to digital spys EPG listing and list all those channels available for free and with a freetoview card - a bit easier than typeing them all out eh Geo!

Hi Sat Guy,

Could you please confirm that if I take my sky plus and card away for 3 months, and put an old sky plus box at home, without a card - will the one I take away still work, or will it be 'turned off' ?

In other words does the box send the signal back to Sky, or is it the card?

a sky card in any sky receiver will get the "keep me alive" signal , as long as the receiver is getting its signals from the astra 2 (sky) satellites. if the card does not get a sky signal for a few months "it will go to sleep" and possibly die completely.

if you are talking about the multiroom phone conneciton i mentioned, the receiver calls the sky computer with sky card number and the serial number of the receiver. if these do not match what the sky compter has, then thats when the letters start. it also compares the phone numebrs each receiver calls from to make sure the cheaper card is not at another house! so putting another box in place of the one you are taking away will not work!

I ask:- Does Multiroom seems to be the answer? As long as the motorhome digibox is connected to the home phone line when parked at home. Is that okay? However, how often, and when, does the sky automatic dial-up take place?
Failing that if when at home, or once a month, one re-registers the motorhome and home digibox as a New Instalation" via the Services option. I am told this gets a result.

the receiver dials at random times (mainly during the night), at least once a month, but wil try more often if it cannot get through for any reason (ie not conencted)
yes, in theory the new installation (services, 401 select) should work, but not always.

Thanks for that. Next question. Motorhome in drive. Digibox connected to phone line and switched to standby. Does Sat dish need to be in Up position for the automatic dial-back to work?

that is a very good question.......

i would assume that the process is similar to the new installation which searches for a satellite signal before dailing, so yes, but i do not know for certain.

Hi S&PCG
Re your posts above.

1) Astra 2D is also weak as you go further East and gets fairly poor past Berlin.

2) There are other transponders on Astra2 A and B which are pointing North which also become weak as you cross into Spain.

3) Other sats - I agree many are not suited to only English speaking viewers however when we are in Spain and Portugal we point our dish at Arabsat 26deg. (just next door to sky) for really good progs all in English with Arabic sub titles. - best channels are MBC2, MBC4, MBC Action, Bahrain tv and Bahrain 55 there are others from Dubai also in English.

With a good dish some of Arabsat can be seen in the UK but with an 80cm you can get the MBC bouquet from about half way down France

re 1: yes i know but all i could find at the time was a map that i use here in spain!!
here is an astra 2d map for europe of indicative purposes

Astra 2D Footprint

re2: yes, this is why you can loose channel 4 (and 30 other channels like the majority of sky movies) in the afternoon here is spain as they are on the astra 2b north beam.

re3:yes i watch mbcs quite a lot and if you can get used to the arabic subtitles they show good movies. its just a question of what do you want to watch - there is a free eurosport on astra 19 (on analogue with english audio, on digital it is german only).
for info i use

Ok, I admit it - I am totally confused.

1. I understood that Sky likes to keep tabs on you and that if you took the receiver away from your telephone line, for a period of time, they would know and would send you nasty letters!

2. I dont understand whether it is the card or the receiver which tells sky everything is ok.

3. I have 2 receivers and could leave one at home.

4. I was going to buy a £20 card but that will not give me any more than basic channels, we have the Sky one package at home and really want to take that abroad with us.

Please - can anyone give me a definative answer?????????

Hi,
Thank you for this info.
Do you have a list of Freesat programs please.
I do not suppose it has anywhere near as many yet but I think it soon may have.
Sky will then have some competition, at last.

Ginny

if you buy a new installation from sky, then the contact states that the equipment (receiver and card associated with that reciever) must be tied to the UK phone system FOR THE FIRST 12 MONTHS of the contact. this is so that it can ring skys computer at random times, to make sure you are not using the equipment elsewhere, as the equipment is still owned by sky for the first year (the card is always skys property).
uk multiroom works on the same basis to stop people from shipping their 10quid card to a holiday home in spain...both recivers and boxes must be in contact with the sky computer for the entire length of the multiroom contract. failure of ewither multiroom box contacting the sky comuter will start nasty leeters, and the full charging for both cards - possibly backdated!!!

so if you do not have multiroom or have had your sky installation for more than 12 months then you can take your receiver and card with you whereever and for any length of time.

Hi,
Thank you for this info.
Do you have a list of Freesat programs please.
I do not suppose it has anywhere near as many yet but I think it soon may have.
Sky will then have some competition, at last.

Many thanks, at last a definative answer! I can take it away with us and not be worrying.

Is it as easy to tune in as the little satellite receiver I have already? do I have to alter any of the settings?

it totally depends on your dish size and your location at the time. the further south you go it gets that little bit harder.
when you start a sky box, it tries to download critical information it requires to start working (mainly 6 hours of EGP information). the default transponder frequency (11778) this information is on can be a pain to get sometimes, so you may have to change the default transponder frequency to download this critical information from an alternative frequency. services, 401 select, 2 12129 v 27.5 2/3 (the freq we use here in spain) save. wait. you will know it is working when you get the date and time on the screen, then after about 30-60 seconds later channel 998 will (possibly) appear.
once the box is up and working, do not be surprise if the defatult transponder has reverted back to 11788, this is normal. also the changinfg of the DT frequency does not improove reception of channels, it is just used to assist in the boot process of the box.

hope this helps.

Hi again,

Now you are getting technical again satandpcguy - just when I thought I was ok and could just 'plug and play'!!!

We will not be using the satellite until we are in Santa Suzanna, Spain. We have a large dish which works very well indeed, but I am not sure about altering all the settings, it sound complicated!!

the reason is as above - the frequency (default transponder) of 11778 that the sky box first looks at when it is first powered on is sometimes too weak for the box to receive (especially in certain areas of spain like mine!), so the sky box cannot download critical information that it requires to work - and you get a message of "no satellite signal being recieved"

by changing the frequency (default transponder) to another frequency (12129), allows the sky box to download this critical information so that i can start to work.
when finished, the DT should revert back to its original value.

on my site, under FAQ there is a downloadable PDF step by step guide as to how to do this - and a video with my dull tones explaining how to do it also!! the video was done using an 80cm dish near valencia - which definately does not receive 11778!!
