depends on the rack, if it's fitted to the van wall usually straight up, if its a towball mounted they lean in a bit,

Lean mine slightly toward van, cos i can!

not related but a while back I dropped a whole rear mounted fiamma rack with two bikes on it, ripped holes in back of van, pesky French speed hump snuck up on me at speed, was in the middle of nowhere!

Another thing been bugging me, bought expensive locking wire thing, it now is obvious to me that a small adjustable spanner would enable anyone inclined, to remove the rack complete with bikes, in seconds?

Give the bikes a shake to make sure the handlebars or pedals can't contact the bodywork when you go over bumps, other than that, leaning in towards the van has got to cause the least amount of stress on the rack fixing points and the van's back panel as you are reducing the "moment arm" of the load (y)
