Just wondering if anyone has been this far up as my wife would like yo trace our ancestors but never having ventured into Scotland or up to Shetland I was hoping for a few pointers on routes and places to stay.

You probably already know this and I apologise for giving you information you already have. Tracing Scottish ancestors can be either easy or frustrating. A lot of the Scottish records have been digitised (search on Scotland's People) and most of the records are in Edinburgh. Some will still be held locally. You can private message me with the dates you are researching and I will try to help.

The person who can give you a good idea about Sheltand is a member here and has written a brilliant account of her travels. Again a search on "Thebus, Phoebe and Me" will be revealing but make sure you have plenty of reading time!
