Our Fiat based motorhome has 20,000 miles on the clock and we have just had it serviced (mechanical). With VAT cost £211, which included oil change, filters etc, but no other necessary works.

I thought this was reasonable - would be interested in other peoples thoughts.

Thanks

And that's fine if outside warranty period and your keeping van long term.

I certainly would not buy one without full manufacturers service record.

Do you think, manufacturers make a better job than doing it yourself and KNOWING it's been done right, just because it's written on a piece of paper doesn't say it's been done right, although I concede your warranty point.

When we bought our new to us van , it had a sheaf of paperwork with it but on inspection it was obvious some of the things in there had never even been looked at.
Not that it mattered because I would have done it again myself anyway.

I think you will find you don't have to take it to rip off dealers to get the service done. I supplied all my receipts for good quality OE parts, carried out the service as per the tech sheet and signed the warranty book. But as you say it's now out of warranty and gets a service in between the book intervals. :)

It was a minor, but the guys at M&M Commercials where great and provide a good service. I didn't feel ripped off.

For a newer ducato (x250) the oil alone costs considerably more. using the wrong, cheaper grade oil will ruin the engine
Absolutely spot on.. Low ash fully synthetic must be used with the later breed of engines with DPF filters..
Quality fuel is a must but so few think a couple of quid extra filling the tank is worth the investment on their very expensive motor homes.

Oil is cheap engines and DPFs are not.

We charge £135 inc VAT for a standard full service plus service parts (oil and filters etc), slightly more for a tandem axled motorhome as there are two more wheels to remove. Single rear axle vans generally copme in at around the £200-£250 mark with parts, variations are due to different costs for filters and oil depending on the van. A 2007 onwards Sprinter for example with the V6 engine takes 11 litres of expensive low saps oil. The newest Fiats have a different fuel filter which is proving difficult to get hold of and it costs a lot of money, over £100 for a genuine Fiat supplied unit and none of the third party suppliers have them available at the moment (at least none of the tihrd party suppliers we use).

I have service receipts for my van from over 3 yrs ago supplied by the first owner.
Average price was heading for £300
Of course every filter was around £40 a shot so I wonder what they're charging today ?

I just dug out the receipts from the last time I serviced the van, the parts I purchased were as follows:
Oil (5W30 Fully synth) 2 @ £39.99
Air Filter £22.19
Fuel Filter £11.98
Oil Filter £11.83
Cabin Filter £8.70
Total £134.68

It took me a couple of hours to do, but that included many cups of coffee and various other distractions. :D

Filling up in Luxembourg on way home from italy recently I noticed a drop in mpg

Before semi retirement I used to drive to Scotland and back once a fortnight. I did the same route driving in the same manor time and time again. I did over 50.000 miles in a year.

My MPG was significantly better using Vpower or BP Ultimate over supermarket diesel. I logged and tested by the brim to brim filling not what the cars computers told me.

Honestly it's well worth the extra couple of quid to feed your expensive purchases high quality fuel..
