Hi Pat are you going to share your self build process with us? IE from planning to finished project.
The next one I do I will (not doing one yet)stick details on here from choice of van and why, to the sorting of parts/build progress. In fact everything from start to finish on a daily blog type thing-one of the biggest regrets on my build was loosing all the pics etc when my hard drive failed.I had enough to show all bits of the build as they happened and I could have looked at the pics and over time wrote things to go with pics at leisure.

Hi Terry

Most people have been bored to death with our plans:ROFLMAO:

But yes we will keep a build blog. At the moment we are buyinga Mercedes Benz 1017A ex army or firetruck and having the body built professionally. We will then do the rest.

But at the moment my knee is stopping me getting a leg up into the cab, no rude comments about a leg over etc.:ROFLMAO:

We might be putting the project on hold for a few more months until I know for certain that I can get in it with ease. Its over 1.10 metres tall to where I get into the cab. The box bit we have gone for some stairs that come down and a electronic step at the bottom.

If not we will get a 4x4 MB van and convert that as it will be lower to the ground, but not enough clearance for the travel we want to do, ie world travel.

That sounds like one heavy duty bit of kit :thumb:There is a Dennis fire truck for sale about 3/4 mile from me but it is not 4x4 -it is used as a promo vehicle for a gold buyers shop.

Hi Terry

Yes it is we also want left hand drive, so mostly we are looking in germany that is where the body builder is anyhow. We might end up doing the build there as they have more specialised stuff. Or if we can find somewhere to stay here with enough land to accomodate both our motorhome and truck then we will opt for England because of our inability to speak German.

Its been planned for a while now, but its nearly becoming real.

We currently have an Iveco Daily Laika motorhome, and I must admit the Iveco side of things has been spot on, specially the pay load and rear wheel drive side of things, that has been a great plus. We will be sad when she goes which if plans go well will be before next year.

I "built" a lot of my current Iveco beachside in the Algarve...

I shouldn't really have moved into the van before kitting it out but there you go...

Whilst my van has no "finishing" in it what so ever... no interior paint or wall covering and such like and, while sane people refuse to enter its messy interior, it does display all the best features of a self build.

The bed is where I want it to the inch...

The shower/loo is large (with a folded aluminium, no cracking, checker plate shower tray made to measure)

It has storage with ten (10) drawers and more to follow... drawers are easily the best storage system in a motorhome imo... How many drawers in your pricey modern motorhome?

All the wires/water pipes/drain pipes are where I put them and are easy to reach for maintenance and onward modification...

The fridge, cooker and wash basins are at the correct height for me to the inch...

I could go on and on and on but why... we self builders already know this stuff...

When ever I return from a trip away in my "holiday" Hymer 660 (a beautiful van) I always move straight back into the Wagon... it is just so much more comfortable (for me.)

SELF BUILDS ROOL OK?

JJ

40 yrs and still not got a release date
As you say Terry I am and I agree with JJ's comments. Building your own van is just such a superb exercise.

I used to look at the big twin wheeled hymers and think I would like one. Now when I look I think about stripping it out and redoing the insulation correctly, using hte space better etc etc.

But I imagine we might never change the van, its so ideal

::bigsmile: I know exactly how you feel :thumb:Indeed both wife and I look at ambulances and unusual shape vans buses etc,and decide instantly yes or no ::bigsmile: I intended to keep this one for a year or so,make another and sell this.Alas SWMBO has had her say on this and we have been very happy with what we have for the last 5 years. She keeps asking what would you change ?The only thing I can think of is the position of the water boiler-we stuck it in a cnr out of the way but if I did another I would put stuff like that in the easiest place to get at it,probably under the bed instead of the cnr cupboard

I use mine as my daily driver. Whilst I don't do winter camping we do enjoy days out in it all year round. A trip up the Dales or to the coast with all the home from home conveniences....can't beat it.::bigsmile:
There will always be improvements which can be made but unforunately my skills lag well behind my ambitions.

I put my Malaga 3E water heater in the bottom of my "wardrobe" and it warms the interior ever so slightly making a great airing cupboard on the rare occassions I do any washing...:thumb:

No good in the bottom of the wardrobe JJ -it's full of bog rolls and kitchen towels ::bigsmile:When I made it SWMBO insisted on a full length/height wardrobe only for me to put 2 removable shelf's in that have never come out  Besides the wardrobe would be as tight to get into as the cnr cupboard

I have been living in this one for well over a year now and like JJ I should have finished it before moving in but had little choice in the matter. I ended up having to rush the job and its not as nice as I would like it to be....

I am considering getting an older B Class Hymer and ripping the internals out and redoing to my needs. I would leave the over cab drop down bed but redo pretty much everything else..... Just a thought

Hi Gromett you should have no trouble with the old Hymer, there are loads around with very tired interiors, but they do ask silly money
