Hi,

I have spent all afternoon trying to fix these damn blinds to no avail. What happens is--the pleated blinds ruck up when they are near the bottom. I took the whole frame off and re-tensioned the cords, sprayed the tracks but still they ruck up. The pleated part is not under tension, they just fold up as they lower. There is nothing catching them on they way down and the frame is not buckled. I am at a loss. Any-one know where you can just buy the blind and frame but not the whole window. This is the big 1.4m one.

Hi Jacken,

I manufacture pleated blinds for for domestic and commercial use but not for the motorhome/caravan industry, the principal remains the same though.

A pleated fabric starts life as two or three pieces of fabric bonded together as one flat piece of fabric which is then passed through a hot press where each individual pleat is pressed in, this last process affords some sort of memory into the fabric. It would appear that the problem you are encountering is due to the fabric starting to lose it's memory this can be restored by closing the blind so that all the pleats are tight together, during normal use this is how they spend 66% of their life and thus hold their memory better.

In domestic/commercial use we drill holes through the fabric and use the tension cords through these holes as a guide when the blind is folded closed this stops the problem you are encountering.

Be careful when re-tensioning the blinds, you need just enough tension to hold the blind in position and no more, with regard to lubricating the side guides use a quality furniture polish spray (air arsole) or a silicone spray designed for use on window blinds.

Hope this helps and let me know how you get on.

Thanks for your reply 'Jay Kay'.

What I found to-day was that the plastic frame has warped. I removed all the staples that hold the pleated blinds to the frame, the blinds then folded down together okay. I then re-stapled the bottom of the blind in the new position. I also re-positioned the side tracks to match. I re-tensioned both cords so that they just hold open on their own and everything now works okay. I assume the frames warp due the the exopsed sunlight. All other window blinds in my motorhome are fine. This problem window was the biggest one in the van.

Many thanks again.

I have the same problem with my blinds. However Jay Kay is right in that blinds spend most of their life in the "open" position, but I have mine closed a lot of the time to keep the sun out. If the blinds have been closed for a time they bunch up. Strangely this only happens to the side blinds and not the heiki roof light.

Well done Jacken, glad you got your problem sorted. :thumb:

The problem you encountered tends to only happen on side windows because the pleated fabric is un-supported and tries to straighten out, with roof blinds the pleats are supported so maintain their shape a lot better.

The side guides tend to be flimsy because we need the blinds to be as light as possible, this is not an issue with commercial/domestic blinds because weight is generally not an issue.

I'm a newbie
Hi! I am looking for some blinds for my van and I considered pleated blinds as an option, but after reading your comments, which I'm glad I did, I don't think they're such a good idea. I want something that blocks the light, I saw on other forums people saying that venetian and vertical blinds would just flap and crash around, not a very clean look. I think blackout roller blinds would look nice, be efficient and be handled easily. I got the idea from this text right here: Practical, stylish and available in an array of different styles and finishes, should you require plain, textured or something a little more specialised. A made to measure roller blind is perfect for any room in your home including kitchen and bathroom with our moisture resistant options and also the bedroom with our blackout roller blinds ranges. Blinds come as standard with a bead chain control however choose from other control options as well as personalising your blind with different finishing shapes and braids. Order your bespoke roller blind today for next day delivery.
I'm guessing I wouldn't have a problem with roller blinds bunching up and creasing like pleated blinds do as they would lay flat. Do you know anything about this, if and where I can find roller blinds for the car ? Any suggestion is more than welcome. Thank you and have a nice day!

Seitz blinds work fine and the big point about them is they fit the window. The OP had some problems but they are fixed now.

I can't see a standard roller blind working unless you have square or rectangular side windows and for the windscreen you would need some way of tensioning it. They will also let lots of light in around the sides. To get a proper black-out with a roller blind it needs to run in tracks.

The simplest solution is an external cover for the cab. These also prevent or at least greatly reduce condensation, which you will get with any sort of internal blind. Downsides with them are they are bulky and unpleasant to handle when wet/frosty but providing you have a waterproof bag for them this is not an issue.
