Its some time since I sold my last boat and am beginning to miss it. Have started thinking along the lines of a 15 foot open fishing boat. Something I can easily launch and retrieve on my own and tow with the European motorhome. I quite like the look of a Boston whaler as this seems to be able to do the job admirably. Does anyone know anything about these boats or have one they can comment on. Or any further suggestions please. Am not looking at a newish model as I prefer to take a project on as I get quite a bit of fun from tinkering as well as using.

Unfortunately not Rick, The one am looking at has a 55horse Johnson not a Lister, but have tackled stranger conversions in the past.
Maybe a black diesel burning VW engine swap.

Boston Whaler

Hi, I too looked at the Boston Whaler about fifteen years ago, just before the RIB took over. The similarities between the whaler and the Unsinkable Dell Quay Dory were obvious. The Dory which I ended up purchasing came in two lengths the 11 foot and the better selling 13 footer.

I still don't know much about the Boston Whaler but I do know that my decision was most definitely the right one. It planes at just a few knots, it weighs considerably less and as the name suggests it is unsinkable even with a forty horse on the back. With a thirty-five hp Evinrude she planes at a maximum of twenty-three knots, two up and I have pulled two skiers out from a wet start.

I still have mine though I only use it once or twice a year now as comfort has become more of a priority for 'er indoors.

Hope this helps............regards Griff:Smile:

Thanks for that one Grif, Am obviously tied to size and weight as will be towing with the European now instead of the RV so this is now the main factor for me to consider. I was first looking at something with a small cuddy cabin to shelter from the weather then thought what the hell do I need to shelter for,am only using it on sunny days. A Bimini top will do what I want. Am obviously concerned about towing and launch and retrieve on my own and would be doing that with the camper as opposed to a 4X4 as I did in the past,so lightness is the main issue along with stability. I quite like the Whaler that's similar to a bow rider with the offset controls. Do they do a Dell quay in this style.

From any distance you couldn't tell them apart. Both have the Cathedral hull, same steering position. Mine had a little canvas cuddy but I kept tripping over the thing when dropped to deck so I removed it. Cheap as chips to replace though, two Hoop irons and canvas.
This is the same as mine.

Wouldnt dream of laughing John. As a matter of fact I like the concept very much. Was impressed with it when I first saw it. Problem is its out of my price range and it doesn't need tinkering with. I would love one to tell you the truth.

That's the type of thing am looking for Jim. Its in my price range and will stand a bit of tinkering with. Would have preferred it to have wheel steering but at that money I could live without it. Thanks for that one though.:thumb:
Its at times like this I wish I hadn't sold my aluminium Linder.

Certainly not laughing, what a cracking piece of kit. Not sure about retractable wheels in salt water though.

Checked out those items on ebay, only about 4 of them are Dell Quay, including the last one with the Fletcher topsides.

Avoid the Orkney, and avoid anything polyester, it wont sink but it doesn't sit in the water like GRP.

Some good deals to be had this time of year.

If you see something down my way that you want me to look at just shout (pm).

All the breast Griff.............:thumb:

Have a look at some of the aluminium boats with semi V hull. If you are not going out more than a mile or so then 14 foot will be fine with 10hp outboard. Very light to tow and launch. Had my first sea fishing boat at 14. Had all sorts ever since but gave up last year as health stopped me. Best small boat I had was a 23 foot Mitchell. Used to do netting and small beam trawling from it

Would you be retrieving by reversing the motorhome down the slipway?

A boat with a 50 horse engine would be a bit heavy to pull out on your own I would have thought.

I've always wanted a smallish cabin cruiser and this thread just got me hankering.

Thing is I've no idea what running one costs.. Storage and slippage, what licences and insurance etc...

Don't discount a decent RIB

We will be towing our Zodiac Medline III down to the Med in the Summer, but will be fishing and diving from her March through to July when we go.

Insurance around £100 which should give also £2/300,0000 3rd. No idea on waterway licences fees. Each Harbour and county have different slip fees. Boat with 30hp outboard will never give you more than 6/8 mpg in the sea at speed. Diesel displacement boat with 50hp engine 6mpg as this is a slow boat 7knots max. The faster you go less mpg. Sons 17ft speed boat with 3ltr engine at 20 knots 2/3mpg petrol.

Thanks, that's useful. I must admit I am surprised by fuel figure as I would have expected better but the insurance is lower than I thought..

My idea is to find CL or similar near a slip. Is this something anyone has experience of and would it be frowned on by the CL to turn up in the van tugging a boat lol
