We ditched the scooter idea on account of not being able to take a pillion passenger without obtaining a motorcycle license. Have you considered elec bikes as an alternative?
Geoff.

Bungy as far as im aware i can take a passenger on the back of my moped as i passed my test before 2001. I think maybe jaws means if you do your CBT for a 125 then you cant carry anyone unless you do full test.

I thought that as well. Blimey I have broken the law loads of times:Doh:

A change has been made !!

Sorry folks, my information is out of date.

I just dug out the latest book of words and now, if you passed your car test pre 2001, you CAN ride a ped without L plates, which in turn means you can take a pillion ( as you have effectively got a full licence for a ped )

Will now sod off and do a bit more research in case I am spouting any MORE rubbish !!

Phew !
Yes, I am correct about the pillion situation if you do not fall in the above catagory or wish to ride something larger than a ped even if you did pass your car test pre 2001.

Provisional licences

You can only hold a provisional moped licence if you are at least 16 years old. It entitles you to ride a moped on the road as a learner with L-plates (D-plates in Wales) but you must not carry a pillion passenger or go on a motorway.
Your provisional licence is only valid when you have the DL 196 certificate issued on completion of compulsory basic training (CBT) by an approved training body (ATB).
A CBT certificate obtained on a moped is also valid for motorcycles once the rider has reached the age of 17 years and has the necessary licence.
If you want to ride a moped on the road without displaying L-plates you must take and pass a theory and practical driving test.

Over the Age of 17.
A learner motorcycle has an engine up to 125 cc and a power output not exceeding 11 kiloWatt (kW)

You can only hold a provisional licence for a motorcycle up to 125 cc if you are at least 17 years old. It entitles you to ride a motorcycle on the road as a learner with L-plates (D-plates in Wales) but you must not carry a pillion passenger or go on a motorway.

We considered it as well, but have given it amiss. We have alarge garage on the MH, with more than enough capacity, and when we were at Bedgellert a few months ago, we could have done with one to get to the villiage etc.

What has put me off, is two things 1) the cost of a scooter of at least 125cc, insuranmce, MOT (when due), CBT, test to carry a passenger, protective gear etc.

2) the fact that I hold a HGV1 license, a PSV license, and used to (in my younger day) ride a Norteon 650 with a chair, and later a kwaker 250 or Suzukigt250...all on bleddy provisional licenses:Angry:, so I am a bit miffed that the powers tah be do no accept that i would be competant on a scooter.
I know biker will say its a different ball game, but after youve spent every working day dodging them on the road, you knda get some clues.

We are going to get a couple of pedal bikes, ........until some fool at DVLA decides we need medicals or test's to ride them...:ROFLMAO:

IMO the 50cc scooters are down right dangerous. Restricted to less than 30 MPH they wont keep up with other traffic and with 2 people up they are difficult to keep balance. We have all gone past them and looked in the mirror and the bow wave from the camper has blown them all over the road.

So you knowingly sold me a dangerous vehicle then Dave? :ROFLMAO:

No problem Jaws i had been told by the local cbt training school in dumfries that i could carry passenger and ride without l plates when i bought the scooter 2 years ago.

Bow wave

This seems like a good opportunity to make a point about overtaking bikes whilst wearing my ADI hat. You can never be sure of the effect of your bow wave on anyone that you overtake, but I rarely see any vehicle overtake correctly:Angry:

Don't overtake unless you can do all of the following safely: Check your mirrors and then signal to move out, after checking your blind spot; move 2 meters out from the pedestrian, bike, car etc. to overtake and do not move back until you can see the pedestrian, bike, car etc. in your rear view (if you have one) / door mirror. Oh, and you don't signal to go back on a single carriageway road, only on dual carriageways and motorways! That should give sufficient safe clearance and if it delays overtaking for a while, tough, better safe than sorry :thumb:
