Hi all,
can anyone shed some light on a question regarding carrying a scooter?
Apart from the weight, is it legal for me to fabricate my own rack which would bolt to the chassis? It is not a towbar so I presume it would not fall within the new approved towbar legislations. any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Lee

if its a newish van it could fall under the whole vehicle type approval rules, which is what made homemade towbars illegal, or construction and use rules.

From what I have read the type approval think only applies if you have a towball and actually towing something.. So a self made scooter rack should be ok...
As you say, weight issues will be the first conserns.. Whatever you are buying check the payload and axle weights then do your maths...
Also if you have a Alko chassis you need to be careful about invalidating warranty if you drill any part of it.

the European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA).
This Directive is designed to harmonise all type approval schemes, even the local SVA/LVTA/TUV type tests, across Europe, so each component fitted to a vehicle has to be fit for purpose.

Hi, We made our own scooter rack some time ago, looked at lots different racks before hand
then used all the best ideas.
The (ECWVTA) does not come in to question as it not towing nor does it intent to tow anything.
The only issues you have is how to mount it and what scooter you intent to carrie for the weight.:thumb:

Thanks for that guys, looks to be a bit of a grey area me thinks. Does anyone know where I could get a definitive yes or no on this as I don't want to go to the trouble of fabricating one then finding out it's illegal to use?
Thanks again,
Lee.
