After our first stop in Bruge we are driving to Maastricht. Which route is better E40 around Brussels or E17/E34 around Antwerp? Are they both just as busy?

Don't know about Brussels but Antwerp was a nightmare Sat Nav was telling me one way when I thought it was the other, guess what I was right and there was no turn off for about 5 miles .

Travelled same route round Brussels many times using the RO, it is a nightmare during rush hours and very busy at other times. That said providing you avoid rush hours then it tends to flow okay'ish. Can't comment on Antwerp.

Drove around Brussells last week, in the van, but by myself. AVOID the rush hour, and you'll be ok. That's from my experience....

Last time we went, on our way to Holland in 2013, the SatNav directed us round Antwerp via the motorway system. As I remember it, we went through a tunnel under the river. All was very easy with no hold-ups. Probably around mid afternoon I think.

As others have said, just avoid rush hour times ( I know it can be difficult but hey, it is those sort of times we just stop for a wee bite and a cuppa ! )

We drove round Antwerp at the end of June on a Friday afternoon, it was a nightmare. Vowed never to do that again
