Hi Funsters, I have a 1991 Hymer 544 with rails on three sides of the roof. I would like to store non everyday stuff on the roof. Can I get roof bars that wide or does anyone have another solution/suggestion for roof storage. Many thanks Steve:Smile:

you can get bars but they are not cheap.
a local builders merchants may have some 30mm aluminium box section (if not there is plenty on ebay)
cut to length and fix them on top of the side rails with stainless U bolts. allowing enough overhang to get the bolt in.

    On the roof........

large items increase fuel consumption due to extra drag

heavy items cause instability due to a high centre of gravity.

you have been warned.....in a friendly way :thumb:

somehow i don't think too much increase in fuel will occur.
if you put certain shaped things in a certain order you may improve fuel economy.
lets face it motorhomes in general are about as aerodynamic as the hoover dam

Hi Steve I looked into getting cross members to attach to the rails with a view to carrying a canoe. After climbing up there to have a look it became apparent that they were more for show than for carrying purposes, secured by only 3 small screws and in my opinion quite flimsy.
I'm not suggesting that all vans are the same but may be worth having a look before you make something up and hit the road!
    Regards Vlad.
